Prologue

Alice twisted and turned, unraveling the sheets on her bed, feeling a heavy slime drag her body downdowndown. She gasped and scratched at the air before lurching upwards and into consciousness.

Bob Marley was crooning softly somewhere within the darkness. The juxtaposition of his caramel coated voice and the slime still sticking to the fraying fringes of Alice's psyche made the thudding in her rib cage all the more agonizing.

"No…no…no…no," Alice begged, clutching at her stomach as she scrambled for her ringing phone. "Charlie!" she cried out after answering, her eyes still bleary with black tendrils of sleep.

"She's…she's…gone."

Alice's throat filled with stones and knives. "What do you mean?"

"You know." A keening sound ripped through Charlie's mouth.

Alice could hear an empty mechanical beep, the distinct flat and constant whine of an electrocardiogram. The sound that emanated from her little body – now filled only with ragged bone and sorrow – had her brother thundering into her room, exclaiming angrily about the odd hour. Green eyes flashing, he observed the creature that had possessed his sister.

"This wouldn't have happened if you listened!" she roared with gravel lodged in her throat. She leapt to stab at his chest with her fingernails.

"What the fuck are you going on about?" He demanded, trying to detain her flailing arms.

"Bella's dead. She's dead…she's dead…she's dead," Alice screeched, falling to her knees. She tore at her skin as anguish consumed her. She sobbed, "Why…why…why," feeling as if her lungs were bleeding.

Edward remembered back to only a few hours before, when Alice was pounding on his door, begging him to head her warning that something was going to happen to Bella. He was reticent to waste his precious time one something that was so trivial. He snatched her phone up, barking. "Charlie!"

Edward could hear a faint, unsteady beeping in the background. "Tell Alice she's back. Tell her!" Charlie could hear Alice's voice imploring to any and all gods she could think of.

"What the fuck is happening?" Edward griped, unable to think with all of Alice's shrieking. Factored into that was Charlie's voice over the roaring whir of ambulance sirens.

"She keeps saying 'Felix Volturi'. What have you people done?" Charlie snarled.
