Danny stuffed the Santa hat on his head and crept out of the room. Sam was still sleeping soundly, and 'Santa' had some work to do. He turned on the coffee, humming a Christmas carol to himself. Not only was it his and Sam's first Christmas married, but they had just moved into their new apartment. So I better make this special,
Just as the coffee was ready, he heard quiet padding coming towards him. Sam suddenly jumped on his back and Danny faked surprise. "Merry Christmas!" She said, her voice still gravelly from sleep. "Did you get me a present?"
He spun her around then kissed her nose. " I got you coffee. It's black!"
Sam giggled. "Just how I like it!"
Wiping his hands on his hands, Danny realized he was sweating nervously. "You want to go see what Santa left us?"
In answer, she took his hand and waltzed them into the tiny living room. Danny laughed in spite of himself.
Sam elaborately picked out her first gift – "Hmm, I spy a package with my name on it. Shall I open it?"
Danny grinned. My wife is so hot. "It has your name on it? Well then it must be for you, little girl. Have at it, sweet thang." He winked. Sam laughed.
She tore the paper off slowly. "You pick out a pretty sweet wrapping paper, Phantom. I like the spiders."
"I had to go shopping around Halloween to snag that little baby."
"Good thinking."
She paused, looking at the crude notebook, which was a bit tattered. Oh great, Danny thought, she thinks it's ratty… actually that's very legit – it is.
"Sam, that's not just a crappy notebook." He said, as she looked up in surprise, (and maybe some relief).
"It's not? Oh good. I hate thinking of nice things to say about cruddy presents."
He scooted over to sit by her. "Actually, for a long time now, I've been writing to you." Danny fanned the torn pages. "Since the accident, at least. Ever since I liked you."
Sam looked at him with shock. "That's a long time, Fenton." She opened to a page and began reading –
"Sam, I don't know if you realize this, but I like you a lot. I'm so glad that we're a couple now, you know? The Wes Ring really was just symbolizing how chicken I was to tell you how I felt. And, by the way, if I ever have kids, (with you), I want a girl named Lily, too. Just to let you know."
Danny waited for Sam's reaction. Instead of pouncing on him with glee or kisses though, she just sat for a second with her head down. "Sam?" He ventured, lightly touching her back. Suddenly, she scrambled for a small box with Danny's name written all over it. "I was going to give you this last." She managed.
He looked from the box to her. She grinned at him and urged, "Go on," with tears just barely rimming her eyes.
The box only held two things; A small printout of a bottle and the words, "Can we name her Lily?"
She held up the book when he looked up. "Well, you kind of already promised."
