Matt leaned back in the seat, staring at the car's ceiling, trying not to let his frustration show. Beside him, Mello sighed, then spoke. "I think I've got you figured out, man."

"Do share." Matt said, lighting a cigarette.

Mello took a deep breath, a bite of chocolate and began his theory's explanation. "You see, Matt," he said, chewing thoughtfully, "you like videogames because you get extra lives and cheat codes. Mana and money, just with the push of a button."

Matt started to object, but Mello put a hand over his mouth before continuing. "You've played games so much that you get frustrated in the real world."

Matt scowled, removing Mello's hand.

"You keep expecting cheat codes to help get you through your life. And they're just not there."

Matt thought it over for a few minutes before responding. "I like videogames because they're challenging." he argued. But deep down, part of him thought maybe Mello was right. He liked games because they were easier to face than real life. It could be true.

Mello looked out the car window. "And that's why this job's got you so worked up. There's no extra life to grab. You know if you mess up, it's game over." He turned to look at Matt and both pairs of blue eyes met.

"I like the challenge." Matt insisted stubbornly.

"Good, then." Mello smiled, taking another bite of chocolate. "This should be your best challenge yet - getting through life, with only one chance."

Matt swallowed.

"But listen, Matt." Mello leaned his seat back too. "Even if you only have one life, you've got another player on your side."

Matt shrugged. "One that likes to pick me apart and turn me into a psychology study." he muttered.

Mello grinned. "Matt, this is a two-player game. And we're gonna beat all the levels."

The two sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes. Matt wondered what these levels would be, and what enemies they'd have to face. But after having this talk with Mello, he felt so much more relaxed about the game. He had someone else who he could count on to have his back in the tough spots. They'd make it through the game, and what's more, they'd hit the highscore board. Matt smiled, taking a puff from his cigarette.
