Disclaimer: not mine
Notes: old fic that I thought to post. I haven't written in this fandom forever (don't even know if I can anymore). Title is from the song "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson.

The rules are the rules and he's not dumb enough to ignore their existence altogether.
She is not of this world, never has been, not with those frail fingers that struggle with opening juice-boxes but are deft and quick in binding someone twice her size.
The rules dictate that they will not reside in the same world once the wars are over and what's left of Seireitei is at peace.
Sometimes, he catches himself diving into the depths of hell on purpose, clashing swords with countless possibilities that are likely to end in messy deaths of bodies and souls. He's not fond of the rules by any means but he only breaks the ones he can get away with breaking. Timing is everything, after all.
Sometimes, he catches himself looking at her, gaze lingering longer than it should.
(He is always careful to look away in time.)
