Author's Review Response Notes

Gabi here. From now on I've decided to post responses to the reviews that I get here, as I often have something to say about them, and this strikes me as a good way to respond. Note that I totally stole idea entirely Karina Kineshi ^^ Please don't throw stones at me ^^

Eri -- Get your own Saitou Flavored Air Fresheners for a limited time only! I admit "Saitou scented the air" does have an oddball quality to it, but I really wanted to capture the idea that he is a wolf after quarry, and "scented" has a much more dangerous feel to it than "sniffs." It's definitely wilder and more Saitou ^^. Thanks for you comments on the mood I set. A friend commented that this feels very much like a hard-boiled detective novel. I'm very much a fan of that genre and I think it fits Saitou, and Kyoto, amazingly well.

Sykim33 -- The anime (which my fanfiction is based in) never actually mentions where Saitou lives. In fact, it sort of leads the viewer to believe that he does in fact live in Kyoto, although he is still a special inspector under the jurisdiction of the Police Commissioner of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. If he liked in Tokyo, he would have treaded on Kenshin's toes at some point earlier than the beginning of the Kyoto arc, in my opinion. Tokyo just isn't big enough to house both Saitou and Kenshin, they need a good healthy four hundred miles between them. Also, Saitou is former Shinsengumi. His flavor fits with Kyoto, and while he may wander off to various corners, I think he fits the best in Kyoto. In both the anime and the manga, he is always where the action is, not matter where that action is. He doesn't necessarily have to live where he officially works. He is a special officer, after all, and I doubt anyone is too keen on telling him what to do. We also assume, from his time in Kyoto during the Kyoto arc that he does have an office there that either belongs to him, or that he can monopolize whenever he wants to. This is the office he mentions in chapter one. And also, because Saitou seems to enjoy Kyoto more than Tokyo, we'd assume he'd have some sort of residence there (he does drop Eiji in Kyoto with Tokio, not Tokyo, after all) and we'd assume that's also where Tokio lives, whether or not he has some sort of swinging bachelor pad in Tokyo for when he has to stay there, is up to him ^^.

I know I'm playing with the historical facts a bit, as historically, Saitou did live in Tokyo, but I'm only doing it for the benefit of the story. When facts interfere with the fictions you have to bend the fictions a bit. This is Rurouni Kenshin after all, not a text book, and I do stick to the facts whenever possible and I do research a great deal. Sometimes you have to bend the facts to make things interesting. Gatoutsu never existed either, remember ^^.

As for honorifics, the two places where characters do not use honorifics are in there on purpose. Hisako, the waitress girl, is only about seventeen years old, so she's probably not the type that Saitou would grant a -san to. I doubt he'd call her -chan either, considering he wants to distance himself from her. In fact, in the series, Saitou damn near never grants anyone an honorific. He rarely even uses their names. See "Battousai" and "Weasel-girl" for evidence of this. His lack of honorific for Hisako goes along with this, except she's not even special enough to deserve some sort of degrading nickname. She's just scenery, so she's just "Hisako." Nothing more, nothing less.

Sumire calls Saitou "Hajime" with no honorifics mainly to push his buttons. Notice that she's quite good at this. She knows it's rude, but she's pretending to a friendly intimacy that isn't there, as if Saitou were her long lost best friend or something. As if she's on his level and can call him "Hajime" as if she were an equal. It's her way of asserting that they're partners and that she's not some sort of sidekick.

Foggy -- I'm really glad you like my work so much ^^ I'm still working on the Soujiro line of plot, I just made a deal with my favorite con-artist (http://www.seiryuu.org/~relia/upperlack/) and Company of Wolves is the result. Writing Saitou is a challenge for me, as he's very different from Soujiro, but once again, he's a character that gets very little love. Well, I'll rephrase that: Saitou gets very little love in the form of stories that are centered around him and don't involve him sleeping with Sano XD. The next chapter of Alternatives should be out in two weeks or less and I'll probably produce a few short pieces of Kuri/Soujiro fluff to fill up the time lapse between Crying and Raindrops. Once again, thank you for reading. I love hearing from people who follow all my work ^^

Alexiel -- Makes him look like a bellhop? :D I agree. The hat is eeeevil.

Mara -- Thank you very much for your wonderful comments. You have a lot of determination and moxie to continue writing a long story that isn't in your native language. I can't imagine trying to write a fic in German. My German is totally crappy. You have a healthy chunk of my respect for even /trying/ to do something like that ^^. I can't wait to see how you'll react to my take on Tokio ^^.

Bribery! -- Yes, keep reading! Here's your bribery, by reknown internet personality Relia: http://www.seiryuu.org/~pinkfluffy/rurouni/fanfiction/bottom/paisley-cg.gif -- that would be Saitou and Sumire, rather obviously ^^
