Sam was in a good mood. Maybe he didn't deserve to be. The Apocalypse still carried his byline; he had innocent blood on his hands and the cries of that nurse forever in his ears. Dean was by turns snarky and concerned, solicitous and sarcastic, and that Sam figured he deserved. If Dean never trusted him again, well, he'd be justified, wouldn't he?

Today though was being a good day. They were in a motel that didn't blind Sam with its brilliance or baffle him with its decorating theme. He'd laid down 'just for a minute' after lunch and woke up four hours later with the comforter from Dean's bed tossed over him, the shades drawn, the TV on low, and a note from Dean practically taped to his nose,

'I'll be back. You be here.'

Dean must've found a lead on a job, or he was out getting dinner, or something. Whatever it was, he'd trusted Sam enough to leave him alone for a little while. That was something. These days it was practically cause for celebration.

Sam got up and spread the comforter back on Dean's bed and got himself a bottle of soda pop from the mini fridge and fired up his laptop. Sure enough, not too long later, Dean came in with bags and bottles of dinner. He kicked the door shut and lugged his packages to the table.

"Y'okay?" He asked. He sounded a little put out and it threatened to take a little of the shine out of Sam's day.

"Yeah. I just woke up." Sam answered cautiously, wondering where Dean's mood might be headed. "Thanks for letting me sleep."

"You always were delicate." Dean said and punctuated it with a smile as he started to unbag dinner, so Sam figured he was in the clear. For the moment anyway. "We gotta eat and get on the road. I had a little chat with Cas while I was out."

"What's going on?" That was cause for concern too. Castiel had never ever shown up with good news.

"Word is we've got another angel on our asses. An archangel. Cas says he's one of the most powerful beings in the universe."

Sam couldn't resist. He was tired, he was to blame, he was every bad thing they'd ever fought against. But he couldn't resist. Giving Dean a completely blank, utterly innocent look, he asked,

"Dad's an archangel?"
