Disclaimer: I do not own Fullmetal Alchemist. If I did, it would suck. And Scar would be a penguin.
Nightmare
Riza Hawkeye was not one for nightmares. Or, that's what everyone thought. Truthfully, she was haunted at night quite often, memories of horrible years spent in Ishval suddenly flooding her mind.
Sometimes, it was actual memories, like of Kimbley's speeches next to a campfire, or seeing an innocent Ishvalan child dead next to the side of the road, ignored by a company of soldiers happy to be going home.
Others, it was what-if dreams, where she was too late, and Roy died in front of her eyes before she could get help. Those were the worst, she thought, the ones when she felt truly and utterly helpless, unable to save people she loved.
She would toss and turn, crying out softly as she dreamt of the awful things that could have happened.

He always knew when she had one of those dreams. He didn't know how, it was just a feeling he would get, telling him to get over to Riza's place now.
So go to her small, tidy apartment he would. He would let himself in, walking straight to her bedroom, finding the dog on the floor next to her bed, looking worriedly up at his owner's bed.
He would sit next to her curled-up form, seeing her blond hair strewn across the pillow, feeling the sheets soaked in sweat as he shook her shoulders ever so gently, waking her from her terror.
As she woke, she would feel his strong, caring arms around her; hear his voice murmuring quiet assurances. She would bury her tear-streaked face in his shoulder, aware of his obsidian eyes on her, wanting to know that she was okay, that she would be alright.
But then she would realize that she didn't have to cry, he was here, he was alive, and it was just a dream. It would be okay, she told herself, as long as he was there to wake her up.
Then she would slowly find herself slipping into a more relaxed sleep, knowing that he would be there in the morning, asleep on the couch, raven hair falling gently over his face as he slept.
Life would go on, and they would be alright. They would be alright, because they had each other.

Author's Note: It's my first time writing fanfic, so I don't know if it's any good. Crits are very welcome; I could use the help!
