Knock, Knock

The house where they were a happy family is silent with loss. Arranging flowers---she's always loved flowers, though these remind her of too many funerals---Shea hears her daughter come clattering downstairs.

Madison scampers into the room, happier than she's been since their homecoming. It's a relief to see her returning to normal, face alight with mischief. "Knock, knock!"

"Who's there?"

"Abby and Jimmy!"

"That isn't funny!" Shea protests.

The doorbell chimes an arpeggio.

Madison beams at her mother. "No joke."
