A Sad Smile

Why? Why do they say that the moon was "smiling sadly"? It had no face. No heart. It was better off than the rest of humanity, sitting distant and untouched by sin in a pedestal for gods. It can't feel. It can't hurt. It can't love. So furthermore, it can't smile....

What kind of argument was that? Elena stood from the window and forced herself to lie still on the bed. She could still see that moon looming victoriously through the window. Cloudless as it was, it shone magnificently among weakly twinkling stars. It was awfully quiet...and perhaps sad despite where it was. Or jealous...that human life was colorful with friends and family and love and problems.

But not of Elena, definitely not of Elena. For sure, it didn't want to be as miserable as she was, as terrified by the fact that Zick had opened up to Lay and confessed his feelings to her. And since then, that Tamer seemed to have replaced her as his best friend. With a simple "Yes, I like you too," she had taken Elena's only title to Zick and buried it in a pile of old, forgotten memories.

But tonight would be the last time she cried over it. For the days that followed, she only made enough effort not to keep writing his name with in hearts and floral designs all over her notebook. He would have seen it, being her seatmate, but his mind was always elsewhere, with Lay. Damn Lay.

"What's wrong, Elena?" he asked for the first time.

Remembering the moon's silent pride, Elena exhaled and curved her lips upward. The moon can't smile, she thought. A sad smile...that was the best she could give.
