Pink Aura
Katara was trying to decide whether or not the cloud that she was staring at looked more like a smiling Aang or simply just her imagination of the picture. Lying on her back on the grass near where Sokka and Aang is, she had gotten bored at watching Sokka talk about how he had his boomerang and had instead been busy daydreaming.
"Weird."
The familiar voice startled her out of her thoughts, sitting up and staring at Toph, who seemed to have appeared out of thin air.
"What?"
"Pink." Toph repeated. "Your aura, I mean."
"What does that mean?"
"You're in love."
Katara couldn't quite banish the blush that immediately reddened her cheeks, choosing instead to shake her head and stammering. She tended to forget about this side of Toph, though others would find it hard to forget—it wasn't as if everyone had a friend who was able to see through you and auras and other things that ordinary people would not be able to see. "How can you see colors?"
"It's only an observation." Toph said slowly. "It could easily mean that you are content with your life at the moment, not worrying about the war and all." She shrugged. "I chose to interpret it differently, that's all."
"But why on earth would you say that I'm in love anyway?" Katara asked, silently thinking to herself, in love with who?
"No reason." Toph said, gaze shifting to the side, to where she felt the boys are standing. Katara followed her gaze and then she began to blush an even darker hue when she met Aang's eyes onto hers. She ducked her head to hide her face.
When she finally was ready to look up, she saw that Toph was staring at Sokka once more. Not staring, but feeling him through the earth. Katara stared at her in wonder for a moment and then smiled, lying back down on the grass.
"Well then. I can tell what your aura is right now." Katara said, staring once more at the sky. Toph's gaze left Sokka, down to her, puzzled.
"It's pink, too." Katara answered the unspoken question. Toph blinked at her for several moments, too surprised to notice the two boys approaching them both.
"Toph, can you feel the next village we are headed?" Sokka asked.
"Why are you sleeping out here, Katara?" Aang asked at the same time.
Both girls looked up at the two boys standing over them (maybe just Katara), looking down.
In Katara eyes, seeing Aang above her with the perfect blue sky in the background was enough to complete the picture of a wonderful day.
"Can't you see that we're sharing the same aura?" Katara asked with a smile, pointing to Toph and herself.
Aang and Sokka looked at each other and then back at the grinning Katara and the blushing Toph, not quite understanding Katara's words. But it didn't matter to Katara, because Toph understood her and it would be their little secret. And the sky, of course. Because it was so blue that it seemed to be winking at her. She could almost kiss it.
