This is an odd little One-Shot from Yuffie's POV, both first- and third-person, for the KH_Drabble prompt "One-Liner." The italics are Yuffie's direct thoughts (since FFN won't let me indent! *growls*) Also, this was loosely inspired by the very talented fiercesunshine.
As always, please R&R!!
She had chosen it when he'd refused his birth-name, cast it off like they had their tattered home world. She was still annoyed with how much he wallowed in self-loathing over something none of them could change.
It was hard on the rest of us too. I don't know why he blames himself.
She knew as she thought it she was lying to herself—she knew exactly why Squall had issues.
He failed too many times, just like the rest of us. She winced as the thought occurred to her, though her heart of hearts told her it was truth. Plain, simple truth: that was why Squall Leonhart had abandoned his past for a plain, simple name.
Leon. Why the hell just "Leon?"
Maybe because 'Leon' left no room for error: no confusion, no letting things like names and stupid weakness stop you from saving the woman you loved. No letting a man you respected fall off a cliff and be consumed by Darkness, just like everything else you'd ever known. Nope, there was no watching your world fall apart when things were plain and simple. The good guys still won in worlds like that.
Just thinking about it made her grumpy.
Aerith and I didn't stop it either, and you don't see US changing our names!
Somewhere, though, deep down she knew she wished she could. Pull her knees up to her chest and sit in the corner of her room like a normal child, crying because she'd lost everything she had instead of being what she was now: Yuffie, wielding a shuriken and a bad attitude to keep the Heartless and darker memories at bay. That was why she followed him everywhere he went; she would learn from his stoicism, be as detached from the haunting images as the dead man behind the gunmetal grey eyes.
She called him 'Braveheart' in her head.
Only because 'Leon Leonhart' sounds stupid.
She'd never tell him—he'd snicker, maybe throw a 'Whatever' at her childish idolism if he knew.
And that's why he'll never know! No one keeps a secret like the Great Ninja Yuffie!
A tear slid down her cheek. He would never, ever know.
Please R&R!! Pretty please? :)
