Of Words Unsaid

He did not speak
of how he felt that day,
when he heard
how his brother returned in a column of light,
alone,
the quest completed.
Jaken, squawking,
did not catch his almost imperceptible sigh
contemplating loss.

He did not speak
of how he felt that day,
when he heard
the soft voice of the young woman
sitting with his brother
returned from that place the magic took her,
or saw the peace in his brother's eyes.
Jaken, squawking,
did not catch
the envy in his sigh,
contemplating the cruelty of karma.

He did not speak
of how he felt that day,
when he took her hand,
his Rin, no longer a child,
but the young woman who knew
how to read his sighs,
and who saw beneath his silence,
leaving him no need to speak at all.
Jaken, squawking
at how he was left behind
did not see his master's smile
as he contemplated
what it meant to finally find
what was waiting for him after all.
