Chapter 50: Epilogue
Time heals all wounds, or so they say, and it was no different for Spinelli and the gang. A few months later most people had gotten over the whole 'Spinelli's gone bad' ordeal. Spinelli's behavior was seldom in question now, or at least not more so then before. The 'bad crew' never bothered her, and Spinelli didn't antagonize them. TJ got more relaxed deciding that Spinelli was back to stay, and in general, the legend of the Queen of the Rebels faded into Recess legend.
Children have a tendency to move on quickly, and so most no longer remembered the events, unless brought up, and as days passed the remembrance got hazier and hazier. Kids couldn't remember if it happened, or was a dream, or a legend, or if it was a play of sorts. And so things got back to a usual rhythm.
It was because of this passage of time that it was so natural for TJ and the rest of them to be sitting at lunch together eating and chatting. Today Mikey was particularly famished. So much so that he was eating off of everybody's plate, without asking.
"Watch it Mikey, you almost knocked over my tray!" Gus yelled unhappily as he tried to fix the upset.
"Is anything up Mikey? You're not the type of guy who goes around taking peoples food without asking." TJ questioned, attempting to speak nice and calmly, but also get the information out of his friend.
"I'm just hungry." Mikey growled, grabbing more of Gus' food off the plate as Gus wrestled, and ultimately lost, the match for the tray.
Vince shook his head,
"Man Mikey, I'm beginning to get worried about you. It's fine if you're comfortable with your own body and all, but you also got to think about your health. It takes a lot of work to keep a body going. Vitamins, calisthenics, eating right. Mark my words, if you make a change now you'll thank yourself for it later."
Mikey stopped eating and glared down at Vince,
"Are you saying I'm too fat?"
Vince sighed and shook his head,
"I did not use the F word, all I'm saying is I'm worried about your health. It's one thing before, but lately you've been eating pretty much everything, including other people's food. I've got to say it how it is Mikey, it's rude and unhealthy."
"I'm not eating too much!" Mikey said, "I'm a growing boy, growing boys eat everything in sight. You're a jock, you should know about needing food to grow and all. It's perfectly normal to have a healthy appetite at this age."
"Healthy appetites are fine." Vince put in, as TJ began to get nervous.
"Now Vince, there's no need to be so harsh, Mikey's a big kid, he can make his own decisions."
"What do you mean by big?" Mikey pressed in anger.
"I didn't mean it like that." TJ promised.
"I don't understand the problem." Gretchen posed confused.
"How can you not understand the problem, TJ just called me big."
"But you are," Gretchen said matter-of-factly cleaning her glasses, "are you telling me you believe you are small in size? I always assumed you were aware of the fact that you are rotund and had made that choice. Gus is the small sized one in this group…perhaps also Spinelli, its hard to make the correct calculations considering her hat and boots."
"Hey!" Gus said with a frown.
Spinelli gave a little glare, but decided not to jump in.
Not very happy with Gretchen at the moment, Gus still decided to try and help Mikey,
"Yeah Mikey, it's okay if you're a bit big, you're still a great guy…when you're not taking other peoples food anyway."
"Choice? I didn't choose it, this is just how I am. What am I supposed to do starve?" Mikey asked getting rather upset.
"Not starve, just lessen some proportions or work out. We can even work out together if you want, I'll help you out." Vince offered.
"Oh yeah that's a great idea, that's all I need to feel good about myself, prove that I can't exercise well due to my size."
TJ was beginning to get rather nervous with this line of conversation and Spinelli picked up on some of this and knowing what it was like when the group seemed to be ganging up on one, she decided to play Mikey's advocate,
"It's alright Mikey do as you like, here you can have half my sandwich."
"Why thank you Spinelli, at least I have one friend here."
"We're all your friends Mikey."
"Well you aren't all acting like it."
"I'm just trying to help you out, you can take it or leave it, but the attitude is unneeded." Vince snapped, since he really hadn't been trying to be mean.
"Hey Mikey, how's it going?" Kurst said, having walked over to say hi.
"Not well Kurst, I am being judged." Mikey said looking up at Kurst.
"Judged? Judged for what?"
"Eating."
"That ain't nothin' to be judged for, you see food, you eat it, you find something else to eat."
"Now that sounds like a plan." Mikey said getting up dramatically, tray and all.
"Mikey where are you going?" TJ asked trying to get room enough to stand.
"Somewhere where my voracious appetite doesn't offend. Come on Kurst." Mikey said walking away as Kurst did a double take and then went to go catch up.
"Mikey come back! We aren't offended!" TJ called.
"Just leave him be, he'll get over it soon enough." Vince suggested.
"Leave him be? You mean like we did with Spinelli?" TJ asked pointedly.
Both boys thought about it for a few seconds and then started running in the direction of Mikey, with Gretchen and Gus right on there heels.
"Hey Mikey eat what you want okay?"
"Want a winger dinger? I think I have one next to this senior fusion comic!"
"There are a lot of productive bigger people." Gretchen added helpfully.
"Mikey, wait up, let's all eat together!"
Spinelli smiled as she watched her friends' antics. It was good to be back with her friends, but she was quite happy not to get involved in this one. Since for once she wasn't the one in trouble, and she wanted to keep it that way, at least for a little while.
