Chapter Twelve

A bewildered Pips had his muscular arms wrapped rightly around the human as they soared through the air under the power of another's swift wings. He kept his emerald green eyes squeezed tightly shut because he didn't trust their crazy new friend's flying abilities.

"Do the two of you always find yourselves in trouble?" Batty asked, causing Pips to open his eyes and gaze upwards. The bat was looking down at the two faeries and not looking at all where he was flying. "Hmm, what do we have here? Sneakers? Little bugs don't wear Sneakers. Y'all don't even know what Sneakers are. This could only mean one thing…OH MY GOD! A HUMAN!"

Pips eyes widened in fright and Crysta shouted over the rushing of air. "A TREE!"

Batty's head snapped up, but it was too late to stop. "Oh fuck…"

The fruit bat hit the poor tree dead center with a loud thud, sending faeries and human flying through the air. All three of them tumbled and spiraled down, down, down. Pips struggled to gain his balance, flapped his wings a few times while reaching for the falling human, and catching him by the wrist.

Crysta righted herself best she could, giving her wings quick flaps, and grabbed the human by the other wrist. Both faeries gently lowered him down onto a branch. She was nothing but smiles and exuberant energy.

"I did it! Can you believe it? I actually did it!" She cried with joy, jumping up and down on her tippy toes with excitement. "Well, I didn't mean to it. I meant to give him sight, not shrink him, but isn't it amazing?"

Pips wasn't paying his best friend much mind at the moment. He couldn't for the life of him tear his amazed eyes away from the sleeping form that lay at his feet. Warm brown skin, sunshine yellow hair, strange garments, and the weird things covering where feet should be.

His mind was racing. His heart was pounding. He felt like he wanted to scream, but he didn't know why. He couldn't explain all this pent up feeling deep within that wanted to burst forth in loud shouts of joy. So many emotions were running through him.

Anger. Fear. Anger. Fear. Confusion. Excitement. Relief. Joy. Anger. Something he couldn't identify yet.

"Hello?" Crysta said, waving her hand in front of his eyes. "Come on back to me, Pips. Come on back now."

Pips blinked his eyes a few times to focus again and the human before them moaned a little. Both faeries jumped and sucked in their breaths.

"Should we run?" She asked.

Pips shook his head. "I don't think we need to now." He knelt down beside the human.

"Oh no!" Crysta gasped, fluttering up into the air. "Batty!"

"You better go check on him," he said, nodding his head before gazing back down at the sleeping man. "I'll stay here and keep an eye on him."

She nodded and fluttered off in a quick blue blur.

Pips reached out with his hand and quickly snatched it back. He had been about to run his long fingers through the human's soft looking yellow locks. He had no idea what he'd suddenly had the urge to do that. He couldn't explain it. It was as if some other force was taking over his actions and making him do things he normally wouldn't do.

The human moaned again and Pips sucked in an even deeper breath. Dark eyes fluttered open. Eyes so dark, they reminded him of starless nights, but they shone with a light all their own. Like some tiny little star was shining from behind each one.

Without thinking about what he was doing, Pips gently cupped the human by the cheek and gazed down deeply into those shimmering black wells. His thumb gently rubbing that warm, golden cheek. Skin as soft as petals. Warm and luxurious.

It was as if the very air seemed to freeze everything in time when the human mirrored his actions. A warm brown hand cupped his own cheek as well. He could see himself reflected in those obsidian mirrors. Was the human seeing himself in his very own eyes as well? It was though he could hear two heartbeats and they were beating at the same time.

"You." They both whispered to each other. "It's you."

A gentle boom of thunder echoed in the distance and a warm sweet scented breeze ruffled their hair. They could both smell rain.

The human's eyes grew wide and Pips didn't want anything to ruin this moment, but they both pulled away from each other. He could see that the human was frightened and very confused now.

"Who are you?" The human asked, quickly setting up, rubbing his face with his hands, and forcing Pips to back a little away from him. "Where am I?"

"My name is Pips," he answered with what he hoped was a reassuring smile, and spread his arms to show that he meant no ill will. "And you are in the forest. What's your name?"

"My name is Zak," he said, looking this way and that, looking even more lost than he did. "What happened? Why are you…dressed that way?"

"Well," Pips said, scratching his cheek. "You were rather clumsily and scarily trying to catch me and my friend. You caught her by sheer luck only, which scared me because I thought you were going to squish her because you were very big at the time. Then this tree started to fall, and she meant to make you see what we are, but she ended up shrinking you. Sight. Size. They both sound alike. Not that you're all that small now anyway. You're almost as big as I am."

Zak was looking at him like he was crazy.

"You and I fell into a spider web and got stuck. Crysta tried to save us before that monster could eat us, but we all ended up getting stuck. So, Batty, that crazy bat, saved the day."

Zak cocked his head to the side. "Riiiiiiiight."

Pips nodded. "Yes." His heart was beating so fast. Where was Crysta? He needed help.

"You are human?" Pips asked. "A real live human?"

The blond slowly nodded his head. "Yes. I am a human. Am I in some kind of strange village where you've never met an outsider? And if so, how come you know English? Am I dreaming? Maybe I fell and I'm in a coma."

"I am a fairy," Pips said, spreading out his glorious shimmering wings. "And you are in Ferngully."

Zak's dark eyes widened even more. That luscious, totally kissable mouth dropped open a bit. That left eye started to twitch a little.

Pips floated up into the air, and then landed on his feet. He held out his hand for Zak to take hold of. There was a moment of silent hesitation and then Zak took hold of it. Pips' hand was slightly bigger, but not by much.

Zak stood before him and he was beautiful. The most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.

"Pips!"

Crysta dropped down, startling the human. Pips quickly caught him and steadied him. The last thing he needed was for the wingless being to fall out of a tree. Now that he had him, he wasn't going to let anything happen to him.

"Hello," Crysta said, smiling from pointy ear to pointy ear. She looked beyond excited. "I am so happy you're okay. I'm Crysta. So nice to meet a real human."

"Um," Zak stammered. "Hi."

"It knows how to talk," Batty deadpanned, dropping down. "How cute."

Upon seeing a giant bat, Zak squeaked and literally fainted dead in Pips' big arms. The fairy struggled not to drop him. He was bigger than Zak, but not by much. They were both sturdy. Plus, he was dead weight. He held him tightly to his naked chest. Just the feel of him in his arms made Pips feel lighter than air.

"Oh dear," Batty feigned concern. 'It seems I startled the poppet. Do you think it'll survive?"

"A real live human!" Crysta practically shrieked with joy, as Pips lower the human to the ground. "What did the two of you talk about? What's he called?"

Pips sniffed and looked up at her from where he sat by the once more unconscious human. "We talked about what took place and his name is Zak."

"Zak!" Crysta shouted, doing a somersault in the air. "A real live human and his name is Zak. Magi is gonna freak! There is so much we can learn now."

Pips didn't respond. He was still a little speechless. That moment the two of them had shared, it had been magical. They had both spoken at once and said the same exact thing. The two of the had dreamed about the other. Was Zak his other half?

"Batty," Pips said, rising to his feet. "Will you please help us get Zak back to my tree?"

"Me?" Batty asked, looking taken aback. "Did you really just ask me to carry a human? What do I look like? I sure as hell ain't gonna carry no human."

"Please?" Pips asked, looking at the bat for real now. "I'll get you all the best berries and show you where they grow."

Batty's eyes got real big. 'Promise?"

Pips nodded.

"You gotta deal!"

"Can you believe my magic actually worked?" Crysta asked, laughing with joy as she hugged Pips. "Well, not the way I intended, but it worked. I'm so glad you're okay!"

"What was that monster?" Pips asked, hugging her back. "It ate that tree as if it were nothing."

"Magi will know," she said, letting him go and taking a step back. "She will know how to fix this."

Pips nodded. He had an uneasy feeling. But when he looked back down at Zak, all his heart felt was warmth.
