Pocket Change

When he was four years old, he told his brothers that he was going to fall in love with a girl with "yellow" hair.

When he was sixteen, he pursued and conquered that promise. She had yellow hair, liked golf, and played the guitar well.

Besides that, her name was Penny and the name just flowed well with him.

Penny and Nick.

A Penny for your thoughts.

A Nick-el for every time you've heard that.

It just went well.

And so, like every other time he had a crush, he fell to hard. He crushed the crush. He wrote a song for her, under his intense stare. And his crush crushed him.

Then she said that everything was okay. That they could do the song as a duet, and maybe they could be together.

Nick liked that. The idea of Nick-el and Penny.

But it was too cliché. The young romance went on and on; but really, it went nowhere.

Nick-el was blind to it, though. He was blind to her crush. Blind to her hyper-sometimes-fake happiness. Blind to her athleticism and her spunk. Blind to her smiles and that look she only gave him.

Penny never gave him looks solely for him.

Penny didn't have a lot of spunk. She had a lot of dumb-nonchalant-gorgeousness. Also, she was kind of a liar. She said she loved Nick too, but not really.

Penny was a user.

But Macy didn't have a lot of dumb-nonchalant-gorgeousness. She was just a cute athletic geek. But if Nick-el ever turned back into Nick and wrote a song for her, she would return that love a thousand times over and not use him.

Macy wasn't a user.

But at four, Nick told his brothers that he was going to fall in love with a girl with "yellow" hair.

What he didn't remember and Macy didn't realize was that, at five, he told his brothers he was going to marry a cute brunette.

So his thoughts remained Penny-only thoughts, and Macy wondered if it would ever be okay.

A/N: So, apparently I'm a Manick? supporter. I don't know. I like the idea of Macy/Kevin or Macy/Joe, but this just fit well. You know how you get musings within five minutes after the episode ends? Yeah, well, I did :-p
