It was just a second past midnight. Not a sound came from a single cat that cool night. Finally, a tiny mew came from the nursery, followed by another. After a couple of minutes, Bluestar went to see the new kits that had just been born. Willowpelt stared at her two newborn kits as Bluestar entered the nursery.

"What's wrong?" Bluestar asked Willowpelt.

The pale gray she-cat lifted her gaze from her kits to her leader, and replied "Only one made it"

Two tiny kits were lying by her now smaller belly, but only one moved around and mewed. The other lay motionless next to his twin brother. A sad look came over Bluestar's face as she stared at the motionless kit. She looked back up at Willowpelt, and let out a small sigh.

"At least one is alive. I'm sorry Willowpelt" Bluestar said before she left the nursery.

Willowpelt looked back at the little kits. One had long gray fur, and the other had fur that was flame colored. It was the flame colored one who did not survive.

A tiny flame colored kit stared at the past great leaders. Each had their eyes fixed on his bright beautiful fur. Owlstar recognized the scent of this young kit; he was part of ThunderClan just as he once was.

"W-why am I here?" the flame colored kit asked. His sweet little gold eyes made each past Clan leader melt.

"It seems you have died young kit. This is StarClan, a place one day each and every cat will come to" Shadowstar replied to him.

Owlstar turned to the other past leader, and began to say something to them. The kit couldn't hear what they were saying, but hope it would be some good on his behalf. Thunderstar stopped the conversation, and turned back to the small kit.

"Being you came here so early in your life, we're giving you another chance. There is a kitty-pet who will in an hour being kitting. If you like, you can be born as one of her kits, if not; you shall stay here with the other fallen cats. It is your choice" Thunderstar said.

The little kit thought about his choices; he could have the soft life of a kitty-pet, or stay with StarClan forever. Finally he asked "Why can't I go back to my own clan! I miss my mommy and brother!"

Windstar sighed a bit and replied to him "The next set of kits that will be born won't be born for another moon; too much time would have passed by then"

"Ok... I guess I can be a kitty-pet, but I still want to be with my brother!" the little kit cried to the past Clan leaders.

All he wanted was to see his mother and brother again, but his only option was being a kitty-pet. All of them could see the sadness in his small golden eyes, which in turn made the rest of them sad along with him. Owlstar turned to Thunderstar, and whispered something in his ear. Thunderstar nodded, and glanced at the sadden kit.

"You will again see your Clan mates, be patient young kit. Besides, you are greatly needed in the ThunderClan more than you shall ever truly know" Owlstar said.

The kit smiled at the thought of seeing his Clan again, and couldn't wait for that day to come! A little over an hour later, the young kit was born among a litter of kitty-pets. Still, he kept his flame colored fur, among the lighter furred kits in the litter. Owlstar had forgotten to tell the kit that the small amount of time he was with his Clan and StarClan he would not remember, but that now didn't matter to the old tom. He knew that very soon, the flame colored kit would be with his Clan again. Riverstar walked up to Owlstar and sat behind him.

"Why did you give that kit a choice?" Riverstar asked.

"His life is worth much more than meets the eye. He is the fire that will save my old Clan. One day his name will be Fireheart, the first kitty-pet to become a warrior" Owlstar replied.
