"You're telling me the trees can think?" Donna asked, eyebrows raised as she surveyed the forest below them.
"Yep, they're sentient. That is their community. A community of trees." The Doctor took her hand as they walked down the hill.
"Do they know we're here? Can they understand us?"
"Oh yes, they know we're here. They think we're interesting creatures, hardly worthy of their notice, though. We move far too fast to be considered intelligent life."
Donna snorted. "Hmph. Do they move, then, or are they sort of stuck where they are?" She squinted up into the canopy, trying to see if they had faces.
"Oh yes, they move, but so slowly we could stay here a week and see them move only a few inches. They live such a long time, they have no need to go any faster, though."
"Oh," Donna said, in wonder. She reached out a hand to touch one, but looked at the Doctor first. "Will they mind? If I touch them?"
He shrugged. "I think it'll be alright."
She rested her hand gently against the bark, and closed her eyes, trying to sense the presence there. She thought she could feel energy pulsing through the tree, faintly, and she pulled her hand away. "Thank you," she said, softly to the tree, before turning to the Doctor. "Every time I think you've shown me the most amazing thing, you show me something new."
He grinned at her, his hands in his pockets. "Can't have you getting bored now, can I?"
She smacked him lightly on the arm, and he caught her hand in his. "No chance of that," she said, lacing her fingers through his and stepping closer to him.
He leaned down, cupping her face in his hand. "I want you to see all the wonders of the universe, Donna Noble," he said, placing a soft kiss on her lips. "With me."
"Yes," she agreed, smiling up at him. "With you."
