"I'll be your reflection, you be my echo."

It was the story of Narcissus. But for them, it was reality.

They spurned others. They denied others. They loved themselves, each other.

They thought the world was colorless, lacked unique value, and was abundant with unrequitedness. They didn't care what anyone else thought, and so, rejected them. They walked the Earth, hand in hand, capturing the hearts of many with their webbing of beauty, then lacerated them with silver tongues. It was until recently, when gazing into each other's mere reflection in admiration of one another's allure, that they noticed they loved each other. Every detail, every quality, every aspect of their personality that the world seemed to lack, they found in their entangled, endless gaze. The more they found, the more reason to build.

A smile— shut windows. A laugh— locked doors. A kiss— parlor walls.

They built a house, where inside, only they existed.

There was no outside.

But ever so rarely— "Maybe never, Kaoru." —a maiden will come along, and she will be the one to captivate their hearts instead. She will tell them, symbolically with her presence, that loving a mirror was a lost, lonely love. She distinguishes them, both of the replicas that no one could tell apart, and says, "It isn't so hard." Yes, that's right; it isn't so hard to tell them apart, because no one bothers to notice. No one bothers to notice the inside, the heart that is fuller, or colder, or just one thing to tell them apart. But what she finds is two people entirely.

She shatters the windows. She unlocks the doors. She demolishes the walls. She drags one away, leaving his reflection behind— the weaker one, the dependent one, the one that became the mirror.

"All we have is each other... right, Hikaru?"
