Shine
Tomoyo watched with unwavering eyes as Sakura delicately picked daisies from the ground. Her small fingers shifted through the grass as she searched for the very base of the stem, and then gently plucked the flower out of the soil. Sakura was always so focused when it came to the little things. Tomoyo admired her sheer determination to always do her best. Whether it be finding the clow cards, or simply picking flowers- Sakura always shone her brightest when she tried.
Sakura held the top of the stem in one hand, and split the bottom of the stem with the thumb of her other hand. She made the slit just big enough for the head of another daisy to fit through, but not too big so that it would cut all the way down to the bottom. Then, slowly, she plucked another daisy from the ground and carefully pushed the top of it through the split she made- making sure that none of the soft white petals were damaged in the process. Sakura laughed. It was a light and triumphant laugh that sounded like chimes in a breeze.
"I did it, Tomoyo-chan!" she beamed. Her jade green eyes danced with excitement.
"Very good. If you connect enough flowers, then you can make a crown or a necklace."
Sakura nodded.
"Will you help me?"
Tomoyo replied with a warm tender smile that almost reached her eyes, "Of course!"
Tomoyo helped with picking the flowers and splitting the stems, while Sakura connected them together. Occasionally, their hands would touch as Tomoyo passed a flower to Sakura. Time passed slowly as the chain of daisies grew. Tomoyo watched with everlasting wonder as Sakura's fingers weaved gracefully through the flowers. Tomoyo treasured these moments. When she was together with Sakura, it was as if time stopped and all the simple things meant everything. Every smile, every touch, and every word was the world.
Suddenly, Sakura stopped.
The chain of daisies had grown quite a bit. It wasn't long enough to make a necklace, but it could make a bracelet that would hang loosely on Tomoyo's wrist.
Sakura's eyes searched along the grass, and settled on a figure not too far off in the distance. Syaoran was standing there with his hands in his pockets. Tomoyo could see a faint hint of red on his cheeks even from this distance.
He must have come here looking for Sakura, Tomoyo assumed. Tomoyo sympathized for Syaoran. She knew how it felt to have such strong feelings unrequited.
Sakura's eyes lit up. She waved at him blissfully across the field.
"Syaoran!" she called to him. Her voice was aflutter with excitement.
Maybe his feelings aren't so unrequited after all, Tomoyo mused. She felt slightly melancholy as Sakura dropped the chain of flowers. Sakura quickly got to her feet and dashed madly across the field to meet with her friend. The daisies settled on the ground- forgotten.
Tomoyo gazed bitter sweetly at the two. Sakura and Syaoran were talking. Syaoran didn't say much, but Sakura seemed to laugh and smile at every word he said.
Tomoyo gathered the flowers into her palm, and began to wonder how long it would take before they wilted. It didn't matter, though. She and Sakura would just have to start another chain some other day.
Even if you find light in someone else's eyes
As long as that light makes you shine
I don't mind at all
