"I don't need you."
She looked up at him, stricken.
"I don't need…want your love. I never have, never will."
Her emerald orbs glistened with the tears she refused to shed. She looked away; his cold whispered words hurting her, cutting her, breaking her heart, piece by tiny little piece.
But then…
A small, sad smile graced her trembling lips. "I know." She whispered back, her voice barely above a whisper.
She knew it was over.
"Because you're Sasuke-kun. You don't need anybody."
"…Aa."
"But Sasuke-kun?" She looked up at him, met his intense onyx gaze meekly, and presented the hand-knitted blue scarf she'd made for him, her head bowed. "I still want you to have this."
"I don't want it."
He made to brush past her, but her next words gave him pause.
"I—I know…that's why…"
He looked down at her, and she pressed the cloth into him hand almost imploringly.
"That's why…I'm also giving you my acceptance along with it."
He froze.
"I'm letting you go."
No…
She reached for him, cupping the side of his face tenderly, and smiled up at him painfully. "After today, I'm going to let these feelings go…"
He searched her green pools glimmering with unshed tears, saw her resolve. His jaw clenched.
Don't…
"I'm never going to bother you again…"
She stepped closer, and he could only stare at her, his body painfully tense, even as she leaned in and pressed one last sweet chaste kiss filled with longing…almost like…like…
His grip on his—her scarf tightened, knuckles turning white.
Don't say it…
She pulled away, her smile, though still equally sad and yet accepting, remained on her lips.
"Goodbye, Sasuke-kun…"
And with her fading footsteps, he knew that, this time, it was true. More than he would care to admit.
Because this time, he knew. He knew she was never coming back.
