Vainglory

He told her to be quiet, and she simply stared him down all the harder. Her accusations, of course, were all completely right. Yes, he wanted to thank Sonic. Yes, he was too proud. He'd never admit it, so he'd simply told her to shut up about it.

He hated that. He hated when somebody could read him that easily, and Amy seemed to be the leading expert on he matter, whether she meant to be or not. Yet, he didn't hate her. Somehow, he found himself unable to hate her. On the contrary, there was a part of him that wanted to break down in front of her and tell her how right she was, because she'd listen and understand. He didn't know if he'd ever run into anybody else like that ever again, but still, he told her to shut up. His own vainglory had betrayed him yet again.

At least, for a moment, he'd gotten himself to smile.
