"We're under attack!" a wolf cried out.

Iruka was quick to react.

"Do not give in!" he ordered. "Attack with everything you got!"

Wolves piled outside the dens. They were clawing and biting one another.

"They come in here and attack us in our home!" Iruka fought on. "Let's make them regret it!"

A new wave of strength hit Iruka's wolves, motivated by such little words. This enemy came into their home, attacking their family and friends. These wolves won't be able to leave these dens alive if they had anything to say about it.

While Iruka fought along side said wolves, he was also fighting for himself. Powerful instinct was trying to drive him away to protect Kakashi. Normally he would have but he could not this time; not in this situation. If he left his wolves would lose strength and as much as it was killing him to stay, he could only pray that Kakashi was safe somewhere, away from battle.

"Hold them off!" Anko cried out as she took another one down. "Give them hell!"

"Remind me never to get on your bad side." commented Asuma as he killed a wolf who was about to attack Anko from behind.

"Can it! I am handling this just fine!" she said, biting the neck of another.

"Oh, really?" Asuma dodged an attack and countering with one of his own.

"Really!" Anko ducked and jumped onto an unsuspecting enemy, killing them instantly. "I bet I get more kills than you!"

"Are we really having this discussion?" Asuma questioned, he couldn't believe Anko.

"You betcha!" Anko smiled and took another wolf down.

"You're insane!" Asuma slid to the left to avoid an attack but left him unbalanced. He tripped. When he looked up he saw a black wolf lunging at him. There was nothing he could do in time.

"Nope!" Anko tackled the black wolf attack Asuma. "I'm just a kick ass fighter!"

"That too!" Asuma got up and started to fight once more.

"Hey, hey! Iruka!" Anko called out when she notice the brown wolf.

"What!" Iruka yelled back. "I'm kinda busy at the moment!"

He was fighting two wolves at the same time and it was his luck that they weren't the normal 'not able to fight' lackeys.

"Shouldn't you be running off to Kakashi?!"

"As you can see, I'm busy!" Iruka jumped back from an attack and used his claws to lash out. It was only a partial hit. The enemy wolf yelped from the sudden pain but he didn't back down nor did his partner.

"Oh yeah!" Anko ripped herself away from her own fight and joined Iruka's. "I can handle these posers. Get to Kakashi!"

"You know I can't, Anko. The pack; they need me here to fight!" Iruka attacked along side Anko.

"And Kakashi needs you more." Anko killed her opponent and turned towards Iruka. He gave one last attack killing his enemy as well. "Go to him."

"Anko..." Iruka tightly closed his eyes. "No matter how much I want to, I can't! I can't forsake the future lives of the entire den just for one wolf, Anko and you know it."

"It's a good thing you're not." Anko smirked. "Look around Iruka! We're winning!"

Golden eyes critically scanned the battle field seeing that Anko was right.

"We are winning." Iruka said breathlessly. "But I still can't go. The wolves! How could they keep this up if they saw their leader suddenly leave the battle field?"

"Fine!" Anko rolled her eyes giving up. Convincing Iruka was becoming hopeless. "Hey! Who thinks Iruka should leave to find Kakashi?!"

She was yelling to the crowd of wolves. Some paused to hear, others continued without missing a beat.

"Anko, that's a nice thought but we're in an all out war here!" Iruka said upset that she would risk several lives just to prove a point.

"Go Iruka!" Asuma yelled while fighting. "We can handle it here, right guys?!"

"Asuma, now is not the time-" Iruka tried to speak but he was interrupted.

"Just go already!"

"Yeah, go find you're mate! We're fine here!"

"We can win without you here!"

The last comment was a little harsh and untrue but if it would get Iruka to go, then so be it.

"Get out of here Iruka!" Kurenai shouted from afar. "Go after Kakashi!"

"See?" asked Anko. "Find Kakashi. We've got this covered."

Iruka nodded uncertain if he really should but grateful all the same. He could finally protect Kakashi the way he wanted to from the start. He gave one last look and he took off.

It was time to find and protect his mate.

Things are not looking good. thought Yamato. He was in Gai's den with the three little cubs, with the war going on around them.

"This is insane." he mumbled to himself.

"Yamato..." a cub came up to him. It was Lee. "Is mama going to be okay?"

Yamato was nervous. He didn't know how to respond to such a question. He could lie and say, 'yes, Gai will be all alive and well when he returns', but there was no guarantee that he would return in the first place. Then, where would he be?

No, he didn't want to lie to Gai's cubs. Gai had taken him in and cared for him. He cared about the louder wolf and his cubs. He didn't want to hurt either of them, but could he tell them that their mama might not even be alive right now?

No. He wouldn't do that.

"I'm sure your mama is fine, Lee." Yamato tried to smile. He didn't know if he was succeeding or not in calming the little cub down but it was the best he could do.

"Why isn't he here then?" Lee questioned.

"He's out there fight, right?" Neji cut in. He was the brightest and smarts of the three and if any of them had an idea of where Gai was and what he was doing, it was Neji.

"Yes. Yes, he is." Yamato said. "The enemy has attacked the dens and Gai went to make sure no one comes near here and to protect those who need it."

"I want mama..." Tenten was tearing up. She was by far the most emotional one of the group. She could be a tough little thing but when it came to Gai, she was every bit of the youngest daughter in the group.

"Oh! Hey, hey!" Yamato sprung to action. "There's no need for that Tenten. Your mama will be fine. I'm sure of it. He's out there protecting others and you from the bad wolves outside. He wouldn't want you to worry about him. He would want all three of you to be brave and strong."

He didn't know if he was doing this right but Tenten stopping crying so he had to be doing something right, right?

"Why don't we all lie down and keep each other company. We'll wait for your mama together and when he comes home, we'll all be ready to greet him. Sound good?" he scouted them to the far end of the cave in the opposite direction of the entrance.

Yamato wasn't stupid. There was a very likely chance that a stray wolf could find this place and would try to get in. He directed the cubs to lie close to him and curled around them. He made sure to face the entrance at all times, never taking his eyes off it.

Neji had a calculating look in his eyes but didn't say anything. Yamato suspected that the cub knew what he was doing and why. He was grateful that the cub didn't say anything to his siblings, probably knowing that it would just scare his sister and brother more.

Yamato stayed on full alert ever since Gai left to protect the dens. He was scared to what was going on and he feared for Gai's safety. He knew there was a very likely chance that he would never see Gai again alive, but he wouldn't think that.

He couldn't.

He had to believe that Gai would come back. If not for him, then for the cubs nestled against him.

Please be safe Gai. Yamato sent out on final prayer.

Sorry for the very long delay and very short chapter but I'm having trouble writing this story. I don't feel inspired to write it anymore but I don't want to leave it unfinished. Does anyone want to help me finish as a co-author?
