---

Muriel, who was soon going to be a widow, cried as she held onto Eustace's cold, bony hand. The old dying man lied stiff on his back on their bed, he was breathing through an oxygen tank. Tears swell up in Muriel's eyes, one by one, they slowly traveled down her cheek. She suddenly let go of his hand and quickly ran out of the room; she couldn't watch him suffer. In the hallway, her face was buried in her hands as she wept. Courage, who was watching this, couldn't believe what was happening. Okay, he never really liked the guy, but this guy was the source of Muriel's happiness. Without that, she would be...miserable. Courage wouldn't be able to live knowing that she was unhappy.

Courage slowly walked towards Muriel. She was still crying and barely noticed Courage's presence. The old woman slowly slid down to the wooden floor, still weeping. The purple dog stood in the doorway, watching her cry; he didn't know what to do.

"Dog," Eustace coughed out, "come forth." The purple dog obeyed and walked into the room. A cold chill was felt as soon as he entered the room. It was so depressing seeing him like this.

The cowardly dog stood about five feet away from the bed. "Closer, dog," Eustace whispered.

Courage took a giant step towards him. "Closer..." He whispered, his voice cracked.

The purple dog step an inch to him. "Closer, stupid dog!" He yelled, quickly gasped for oxygen. Courage flinched and quickly stood by his bedside.

The old man turned his head so that he could face him, "Now listen dog," he coughed, "I need you to do me a favor." Courage nodded his head.

"I want you to take care of Muriel, understand?" A violent cough shook his entire body. It was a very pitiful sight for Courage. Again, Courage nodded his head.

"I want you to do whatever it takes for her to be happy." Eustace spoke slowly, but clearly. For the third time, Courage nodded his head.

"If you don't, then I'll haunt you," The old man smiled weakly and winked, before coughing again.

Just then, Muriel rushed in, tears leaking out of her eyes. "Eustace, I don't want you to go." She hugged him tightly and cried into his heaving chest.

"It's my time, soon it'll be your time too." Eustace whispered in her ear. That sentence made Courage's spine tingle. What he said was true and he couldn't stand it if Muriel was gone too. Muriel gave a long kiss on his lips, she then detached herself from him.

Eustace looked at the two of them, "I think I see the light." Muriel wailed; Courage hugged her, trying to comfort her.

"Goodbye my love," Muriel buried her face in Courage's shoulder. The purple dog could only look at him in sympathy.

"Goodbye Courage," Eustace said weakly. Courage's mouth was gaped open, this was the first time he ever called him by his name. The old man chuckled softly, "Maybe you're not such a bad dog after all." After he said that, Eustace closed his eyes...forever.

The End!

Yeah, it was short, huh? Well, I didn't know what else to write. Please review!
