Tarnish

"It isn't anything important really; you shouldn't make such a big deal about it." She nods as if she's listening, but he knows she isn't. "You always do, every time; I don't know why...it's not that big of a deal." He realizes he's talking to himself. She never listens to him when he scolds her for waiting with him during these nights. He wishes she wouldn't but she does anyways. She figures that she can do whatever she wants. And that irritates him. He tells her so. He says, "You irritate me when you do this." He knows she's not listening but he talks anyways. He needs to ease the tension she creates when she does this. If not, it would be awkward. He doesn't like it to be awkward.

He glances at her from the sides of his eyes. Folded neatly beneath her are her long slender legs, causing the short fabric she always wears to ride up a little. He doesn't mind it. Not anymore. At first he would be embarrassed to see so much of her exposed, and know that she preferred it that way. He's gotten used to it now though; it doesn't bother him as much. He actually enjoys those little glimpses of leg she gives him now and then. Not that he would ever tell her that though.

She's positioned her tiny frame, so she's leaning into his side. He loves the way she seems to fit so perfectly against his body. It is as if she's made especially for him.

Her head is lowered, placed just in the nook where his shoulder and neck meet. He allows her to snuggle closer, and turns his head slightly so his nose his buried in her hair. He inhales. She smells so sweet, so pure, like honey and cherry blossoms. He loves her scent. He places a soft kiss in her tresses before turning back to view the surrounding landscape. The night is falling. He's getting a little anxious.

"Kagome..."

"Does it hurt?"Her small voice lifts into the night breaking the barrier of silence that had engulfed them only moments ago. He smirks; same question every time.

"No." Same answer as well. He feels her hand creep up beside him, taking his own. She squeezes and he feels assured. "Everything will be alright."

"I know."

"It's only for a while."

"I know."

"Things will be back to normal when the sun comes up, right? No need to worry." She's the only one that's worried.

"I know."

"I love you all the same."

"I know." And he does now. He knows it well, how much she really does love him. And he feels a little better. The night darkens. He closes his eyes and reopens them to a different shade. It begins. And for once he isn't afraid.

But she is. She always is. He can sense in the way she trembles, when she reaches for his face. Feel it in the way her lips cling to his. Desperate. They both are. Desperate for it to be over. He looks deep within her chocolate orbs, and he can smell her sadness. It's his turn to reassure her.

"It's ok." He holds her close.

"I know." She holds him closer. They're inseparable at this point. He's forgotten that he was irritated that she did this. He admits to himself that he's glad that's she's here. But he would never admit it to her.

"Don't cry this time, it isn't worth it." She nods as if she's listening.

But he knows she's not.

And he can't stop the tears that slip down her face, as his silver tarnishes in the moonless night.
