Getting it Right
I don't get that girl. She is so kind to everyone. Everyone. Except me. I mean, what have I ever done to her? Remus is always going on about how she is so good at reading people's emotions, so why can't she see that I love her?
"Potter!" she called. I don't get how she can put so much hatred into one word, but by god I love her voice. "We need to organise the next prefects meeting, so get down here NOW!" She was calling from the Heads Common Room, and I was up in my room. I walked down the stairs, right into Lily Evans. I could see the hate in her eyes. Her beautiful eyes.
"Hey Evans" I said. I love you Lily. "When are we going to hold this Prefects meeting then?" She glared at me, and then sat down and banged a stack of papers on the table. I noticed a piece of parchment sticking out the bottom of the pile, and unlike all the other papers, it was in an unfamiliar handwriting. "What's this?" I asked, pulling it out.
"Give it back, Potter."
"Why?"
"It's none of your business!" She was almost yelling now, but I could see the beginnings of tears in her eyes.
"What's wrong, Evans?" I asked, tilting my head to the side questioningly. I looked down and read the first few sentences on the parchment. It was a letter.
Dear Miss Evans,
I am sorry to inform you that you parents have been murdered by Lord Voldemort-
I looked up at Lily again, but she wasn't there. I quickly glanced around and saw a glimpse of red hair disappearing into her room. I followed her up the stairs, and saw her sitting on her bed with her back facing me, her head in her arms. I moved round the bed to sit beside her, and put my arm around her.
"Lily?" I said hesitantly. She sniffed in reply, so I grabbed the box of tissues on her dresser and offered them to her. She took a few and blew her nose.
"It'll be OK" I whispered to her, rubbing my hand against her shoulder. She looked up at me, her angry eyes bright with tears and even more beautiful than usual.
"Go away, Potter" she said, leaning away from me. "You have no idea how I feel, and it won't be OK!" I could see she was going to go on for a while, so I put my finger to her lips to silence her.
"Lily, I know exactly how you feel. My parents died last summer." Her eyes widened, and I could tell she hadn't heard that news. I looked away, remembering that awful day and imagining how Lily must be feeling. "It will be OK. You'll never forget, and you'll never stop caring, but you'll learn to cope, and eventually you'll move on."
"I'll be here for you Lily, whenever you need me" I said. "I love you."
She looked at me, and I thought that I had gone too far, spoiling my chances for the umpteenth time, but then she smiled and leaned in towards me, curling her arms around me. I cuddled her and smiled. Maybe James Potter had finally got it right.
