Disclaimer: Some authors think of fine quips, and others just boring detached monologues because they're bored of giving disclaimers. I'll just say that I don't own these characters or even the events in this case, but I do own my interpretations of Howl's feelings during this particular scene in, "Howl's Moving Castle," and I applaud the artists and storytellers for this film.

Howl's thoughts when he catches Callcipher…

I had just wandered the field after dark. The rain of fire demons was gorgeous. I didn't want to go back to royal academy, not with the war starting. I would give my heart to fire demon so I wouldn't have to go back. I caught one. It was a beautiful fire demon. I swallowed him and then I coughed out my heart.
Then I heard someone call my name; mine and the name of the fire demon I had. It had told me its name before I'd swallowed him. I turned and saw her. Everything about her was angelic, her starlight-colored hair and her voice were angelic and I loved the way the angel said my name. I began to wish I had given my heart to her instead.
She was beautiful. What did she mean to look for her in the future? What was her name again? Sophie. Why would the angelic Sophie want to help me? Will I see her again? When will she come? I miss her already. Here I am staring at the place she disappeared from as I walk towards it, but I somehow know that I cannot follow her.
Instead I must wait for an unknown amount of time for my Sophie's return.
