A/N: a story I've been toying around with in my head for a few weeks now. at one point, I just said, "I have to get this
on paper!" R&R please!
The Book with the Apple
Jane Eyre. Read it.
Romeo and Juliet. Read it.
To Kill a Mockingbird. Read it.
I sighed. Every book on my damned bookshelf has been read once. At least.
I strode into the living room of my little cottage, staring at the spines of all the books on the shelf. I sighed again. Most of them, I've already read. The few that remained untouched by my warm fingers, Dad refused to let me read, the books he deemed "too inappropriate" for my "youthful mind." For a dad, he's quite overprotective. And that's saying a lot, seeing as how most fathers are overprotective, or so I've heard.
I pulled the hair tie out of my hair, shaking out my auburn curls. I opened the front door, closing my eyes as I felt the screeching wind on my face. I set off running, headed towards the main house.
I loved to run, it was something I had always enjoyed. However, due to my competitive streak, I strongly disliked running with my family. Always being the slowest has many disadvantages. But, at the times where I was running alone, I felt… amazing. Like the most powerful being ever to exist. I made it a game, making up different challenges for myself. Sometimes I would try to improve my speed, other times my elegance. Either way, nothing could compare to the feeling of the wind in your hair, your feet pushing you farther and faster until you reach your destination.
As I was nearing the mansion, I slowed to a walk. I could hear the quiet murmur of Grandma Esme humming to herself, Uncle Jasper and Uncle Emmett placing bets over the big game on our huge TV. I slipped inside.
"…Not a chance in Hell, Jasper. We both know the Cubs' losing streak… Oh, hey, kiddo." My Uncle Emmett grinned over his shoulder at me. I smiled back, as he turned back around; eyes fixed on the baseball game. I didn't understand why they even bothered watching, humans are just so… unathletic.
Suddenly, the front door swung open, and in strode Aunt Alice and Aunt Rosalie, both loaded down with shopping bags. I chuckled softly. How typical.
"Hi Nessie! How are you?" Alice inquired.
"A little bored, actually. I was in the mood to get some reading done, when I realized that I have nothing to read."
Aunt Rosalie chuckled at my sarcasm, setting down the seven shopping bags she had in her arms a moment ago. "Well, you have other things to do besides read, like, for instance, going through all the new clothes we bought you." I rolled my eyes; they were always buying me new clothes. My walk-in closet was practically overflowing.
Alice flitted over to Jasper's side. "Pay up, Emmett."
"That's cheating!" he growled. "I owe you nothing!"
Alice and Jasper just laughed. Suddenly, the phone rang. "I'll get it," I said. It was probably my parents, calling to check up on me. They were out hunting for the weekend. And probably doing… other things. Things that most fourteen-year-olds don't especially enjoy thinking about their parents doing. Well, it's not like I was an actual fourteen-year-old, but still.
"Hello?"
"Hey Nessie, how are you doing?" I immediately recognized my Grandpa Charlie's voice. I smiled. I enjoyed talking to him.
"Hi Grandpa. What's up?"
"Nothing much, sweetie. Listen, how would you like to go out to dinner tonight with Sue and me tonight in Port Angeles?" Human Food? Gross. I thought about it. I hadn't seen Grandpa in a few weeks, and I knew how much it would hurt him if I declined. It wouldn't be the first time I had turned down a dinner invitation.
"Um, yeah, thank you. I'd love to go." I tried to keep the grimace out of my voice. I was really lucky he couldn't see my face, though.
"Great! We'll pick you up at six, kiddo."
"Fine by me." I smiled. "See you later, Grandpa."
"See you, Ness." And with that he hung up.

"Bye, Grandma Esme!" I called, pulling on my black jacket.
"Goodbye, Nessie. We'll see you later." I smiled at her, and waved goodbye as I went out to a waiting Grandpa Charlie.
Ugh. People food. At least I'll survive. I hope.
