The bright flashing light of his phone commanded attention, attention which Chuck glumly gave as he rolled over and skimmed the latest text from Gossip Girl. He looked out the window and noted the miserable rain crying down the glass pane through which he currently saw the world. Chuck stood quickly and hastened to his closet, looking for something to wear.

Serena stood desolately by the drinks table, watching the couples dancing and trying to appear cheerful. In truth though, she was upset and lonely. Not one man had asked her dance, although that was a slightly obvious thing as everyone was paired up, except for her. 10 minutes ago she had dragged Blair into the bathrooms and Blair had redone Serena's makeup to the point of perfection. Blair had smiled and asked why she was trying so hard to impress 'cabbage-patch' as they were already sleeping together. Serena had just rolled her eyes and ushered Blair back into her car, watching as the limo drove Blair to her date with Nate, she'd already known that Dan wasn't going to show up. Serena looked back at her mobile and reread the text from Dan. He couldn't do it any more?! What kind of an excuse was that? She glanced around once more, trying to think of something other than Dan. She downed another drink (non-alcoholic) and smiled at the guy that glanced over at her, smirking as his dance partner looked between the two of you and kissed him possessively. Serena's phone vibrated violently in her pocket but she chose to ignore it, figuring it was probably just Blair or Dan or her mother. She never even thought it could be Gossip Girl.

Spotted. Serena Van Der Woodsen, all dolled up with no one to hold. As the couples dance around her obliviously, S is downing more and more drinks – not up to old habits again are we S? Some may be hoping Lonely Boy is just caught in Brooklyn traffic, but I prefer the truth, and from what I've seen he's currently drinking Mocha's in Brooklyn with V. Any one out there ready to be a hero for a damsel in distress. I'll be waiting.

Xoxo.

Gossip Girl.

Chuck stood at the door, eyes scanning through the dancing pairs, trying to spot Serena. He caught a flash of blonde hair and pushed through the throng of dancers, finding her standing self-consciously beside the drinks table, her heel tapping nervously against the floor. Noticing the others watching him, Chuck continued forward. Her eyes finally spotted him, and widened adorably, as her brow creased slightly in confusion. Chuck quickly bent down and kissed her cheek, whispering into her ear "Thought you might need some saving." He stood back and offered her his hand, pulling her onto the dance floor and swaying along to the boring music. He twirled her and watched her long blonde hair follow behind, smiling as laughter erupted from her mouth.

Serena looked at Chuck, dressed in a crisp clean tux. "I can't believe you did this for me."

"You owe me." Chuck smirked as S smacked him lightly on the arm.

"Thank you Chuck. It means a lot."

"For you, sis, anything."

"So why didn't Cabbage-Patch show up?"

"We broke up." Serena replied as she tugged on an imaginary thread hanging from her dress.

"He's a fucking retard."

"I know."

"Good." Chuck laughed, and had to admit he loved that she was so light hearted about a break-up.

"Why did you?"

"Did I what?"

"Show up." Chuck took a while to reply, looking at his hands as he finally spoke.

"Remember in year four, when Blair was crying because I ruined her dress, and Nate gave me a dirty look and ran off to comfort her. You just laughed and threw a handful of mud at me, and we had this massive mud-fight?

"Yeah. We got detention for the rest of the week when Mr Wilks got a handful of mud on his new suit."

"That's why."
