Never Enough
By: Sinnamon Spider

He was watching her go away again. It seemed he was always watching her go away.

She moved down the line, saying her goodbyes, and when she stood before him and looked up with those huge, glassy brown eyes it was all he could do to keep himself from drowning in them.

"Jack?" Her voice was shaky. "It would have never worked out between us."

She was lying, lying, lying as she had never lied before and he could see it in the way her teeth gritted, her hands balled into fists, she shifted on her feet as though she wanted to throw herself into his arms.

And now he had to speak. He didn't trust himself with anything less than bitter humour, and he wasn't sure he could handle even that. "Keep tellin' yourself that, darling," he said darkly, and was quite proud of the evenness of his tone.

She stepped toward him, her heart in her eyes. But he moved away, raising his hands to protect himself. "Once was quite enough."

He was lying, lying, lying as he had never lied before. It hadn't been enough, it could never be enough. But he knew that if he held her now, he would never let her go. She looked down. "Thank you."

She climbed into the boat and he lowered her down to the water, never looking away and as she touched down she pressed her hand against her heart. "I love you," she mouthed, and then turned her back on him.

He was watching her go away again. It seemed he was always watching her go away.
