Protection
I shot through the room at full speed. Despite my exhaustion at fleeing for hours, fear and desperation and pure survival instincts made me go on. I didn't even notice that Sen was opening the doors for me. Something had just told me to go in there. I didn't stop until I slammed into something.
Rage and pain screamed in my mind. It made me blind. I wanted to groan in agony but I couldn't find my voice through all the pain. There was an unnatural red haze everywhere, contorting the room, making it look evil. I knew it was all in my mind, and I tried to fight it. Tried to break free from this magic and clear my head. But I had lost too much blood, and I was too weak.
I heard the pattering sound of those wretched birds hitting the door. They had gotten in! I turned, ready to fight them off until my last, dying breath. Although fight them for what I was unsure. This crazy desperation to protect something made me shuffle my feet and turn my head.
The room was swirling around me, redness and darkness mixing together like spilled inks. I couldn't see anything. I was blind with rage. But there, ahead of me, somehow breaking through all the rage, was Sen. She was covered with them, screaming and spinning and clawing to get them off. She was illuminated, piercing through my foggy blindness like an arrow.
No! I thought. Not her. Don't hurt her! It was a single moment of clarity in this swirling chaos in my head. In that single moment I knew I had to protect her. Maybe she was what I was supposed to be protecting. But I was so weak…I knew I couldn't do it. I could barely go on anymore.
I'm sorry Sen, I thought weakly as my mind dimmed and faded. I vaguely heard her call my name before everything shut off and my body took over, fleeing from the room and from her.
