A James Potter drabble written for honda - please review!

"She was mine first."

James Potter didn't even have the decency to laugh, or at least to look at him contemptuously. If he had, it would have made it all easier for Severus; instead, he just shook his head seriously with no trace of scorn in his eyes.

"She was never yours, Snape."

Severus forced a sneer on his white face; deep inside, he knew Potter was right.

"You don't know that."

It became too much when Potter had the nerve to look at him with pity.

"Sometimes I pity you, especially if you think you could have had her… Just stay away from our lives, Snape."

"Ah, no Snivellus this time, then," Severus uttered with scorn.

But Potter didn't answer. His mind was already elsewhere, probably thinking of Lily whom he was going to join soon to leave Hogwarts, for the last time. Severus would have liked to speak to Lily before they went their separate ways, but he knew she didn't want to see him, and he hated begging.

"I'm growing up," Potter said. "Or at least, I'm trying to."

Potter turned to go. Severus's eyes wore a hole in his retreating back.

"You don't deserve her," Severus said. "You never will."

"Do you deserve her?" Potter asked without even bothering to turn.

The worst was that Potter was right.
