Summary- The unexpected happened, wrenching happiness from it's fine balance on the tip of a sword…

One-shot. Angst and fluff galore. Strange combo…

Just seconds ago, she had been running for an wooden bridge with her ANBU black ops squad to escape he enemies perusing them.

Sakura had stayed behind with one other member at the entrance to the bridge, making sure everyone got across safely.

As soon as they were confirmed safe, Sakura motioned to the man who had stayed with her at the entrance.

He nodded and they began running…

They were almost across when suddenly the leader of the people they were trying to escape cut the one side of the ropes supporting the bridge, then retreated.

Sakura grimaced as the bridge shook and grabbed one of the ropes and held out her hand, which her raven-haired partner grabbed at the last second.

"That was a close one… huh, Sasuke-kun?" She smiled down weakly at the man hanging below her. He smirked in response.

Suddenly another rope snapped… the bridge was completely sideways. Sakura gasped as the rope she was holding began to unravel slowly.

Another rope snapped, but didn't break completely… dropping the two about ten feet, closer to the mist-covered ravine hundreds of feet below.

Suddenly the rope she was holding began unraveling faster. Tears came to her eyes and she bit her lip as she gripped the rope tighter.

Suddenly a soft voice came from below her. "Sakura." She looked down at Sasuke, still biting her lip. She was beginning to taste blood.

"Sakura." He said again, tears forming in the corners of his own eyes. "It won't hold both of us." He whispered.

Sakura's eyes widened, then closed from the coming tears. Rein began to fall lightly all around them. "It will! It will hold us both, Sasuke-kun!" she choked out.

"Sakura. This rope wont hold both of us." He repeated, clenching his teeth and trying to stop those stupid tears from overflowing.

"It will! Sasuke, it will!" Sakura screamed at him, shaking her head.

"I'm sorry… Sakura." Sasuke whispered, staring at her beautiful face one last time.

"Don't you dare give up! Don't you dare leave me, Sasuke-kun! I Lo…" She started sobbing, breaking off her words.

"I think I'm the one who needs to say it." Sasuke said to the sobbing kunoichi, smiling gently.

She looked at him, confused, as the rope continued to break.

"Sakura. I love you." he said, gazing fondly at her pretty face.

Her eyes widened, and she smiled at him. "I love you too… Sasuke-kun. Come home safe."

He smiled, remembering those words well… the words she would always say when he left to go anywhere.

"I would have… If fate had allowed it… my beautiful cherry blossom… My… Sakura." He said, smiling warmly at her as his hand slipped from hers.

"No, Sasuke-kun, NO!!" Sakura screamed, holding his hand tighter. He smiled once more at her before his hand slipped from hers, and he fell below… into the Abyss.
