You sigh before you try to tell her. She looks up at you, brown eyes cloudy. Does she know?

You want to tell her you love her, but you can't love her the way she needs you to. You love her, but you don't.

And you're sorry.

Your mouth is dry and the words won't form. You can feel the tears prickling in your own eyes, but you blink them away. You have to do this.

You brush her hair off her face and kiss her forehead. You rest your hand on her cheek and feel the soft skin beneath your fingers.

Gently, she pushes your hand away.

"I know," she whispers. She's smiling, but you can tell she's dying inside.

You want to explain, to tell her you never meant this to happen, but all you can do is nod.

"I want you to be happy, Josh," she whispers again, desperately trying to keep her composure. "You're not happy with me."

The tears start to fall before she can turn away from you. You reach out to her, to grab her shoulder, to pull her back. To let her know. But you let her leave. You have to. You can't do this to her anymore.

"I love you," you say finally to the empty room. "And I'm sorry."

Back home, there's someone waiting for you.

So, you turn around. And you walk away. And you don't look back.
