"Brrrr," Duo shivered. "It certainly is cold."
"It usually is this cold in December," Wufei replied blandly as they
passed festively decorated windows.
"It was never this cold on L2," Duo said defensively. Wufei always
seemed to be picking on him, and he had a feeling it wasn't entirely in
jest.
"Just pick out the items you want to get and leave me be," Wufei
growled dangerously.
"Fine," Duo said, crossing his arms in front of his chest. "But you
can't come with me. You might tell the others what I got them."
Wufei sighed with relief as the American ran off without another word.
Duo was so… so… overwhelming. He seemed to get even worse during
the holiday season. Singing Christmas carols, decorating a huge pine tree
in Quatre's rec room, buying everyone gifts and generally annoying him
like crazy. During the war it hadn't been so bad. He had had missions to
concentrate on, but now he really didn't have anything to do. The preventers
had all but disbanded and there wasn't much else he could do. Every job
he had applied to had sent 'thanks but no thanks letters' claiming that
he just didn't have enough experience in any field.
Every one else had been able to get jobs. Quatre was now the head of
the Winner fortune. Trowa was helping out with the circus Catherine was
working in. Duo was starting his own sweeper company on Earth. Heero was
a computer programmer with a very successful company. And Blade had become
a teacher at a near by high school, even though she was the same age as
half her students. That left only him to rely upon the generosity of his
friends. The fact that Blade was able to get a job and he wasn't had deeply
wounded his pride and wallet.
"A penny for your thoughts," he heard someone call. He turned around
to see Blade standing directly behind him, dressed in a long green skirt,
a wool red sweater and a Santa hat.
"I was just thinking about how silly you American's get when Christmas
rolls around," he replied with a smirk.
"Ha ha, very funny," Blade said removing the hat and placing it on
top of his head. "You look kinda cute."
"What do you mean 'kinda cute'?" he asked, feigning outrage. "Don't
you mean devilishly handsome"
"Dream on lover boy," Blade laughed, pulling him in for a chaste kiss.
"I've gotten us all gifts, now all we gotta do is wait for the other to
get back from their shopping."
"Or, we could go back to the mansion and leave everyone else here to
shop while we take full advantage of the peace and quiet," he offered with
a seductive smile.
Blade stood there for a second, seeming to consider it. She sighed,
a regretful expression marring her face. "Sorry, Fei, but as much as I
want to we can't. We told the others we'd come with them."
"It was worth a try," he sighed.
"I know you feel bad 'cause we can't get our own place and you can't
afford to buy us all gifts this Christmas," Blade said sympathetically.
"But we all understand. Just having you here with us is good enough. There's
no need to worry. I'm sure that by the time summer rolls around you'll
have a great job."
He gave her a reassuring smile and they continued on their way to find
the others.
