A/N: Whee. Hope you like it! The lullaby isn't mine. It's one my mom always sang to me--but as far as I know, it's not super well known (not as well as rock-a-bye baby, anyway), so I used it.
"Renesmee..." I murmured for the umpteenth time. My daughter. To think that, when I first learned that Bella was pregnant, I had wanted to...
I stopped the thought in its tracks. That didn't matter. This was my baby, my Renesmee.
She placed her hand onto my cheek, though I already knew what she was thinking. She wanted her mother.
"You'll be able to see her soon," I promised. As long as Bella's self control was enough that she could stand being near Renesmee, that was true. Though Renesmee didn't smell quite like a human, and didn't smell a thing like food to me, Bella would be a newborn and therefore more vulnerable to her impulses.
Renesmee touched my cheek again. She wanted to see Momma now.
I had an idea. "Momma's sleeping," I told her, "but we could go and see her for just a little while." Bella would be under for at least another day, so there was no risk here. Renesmee beamed.
I lifted her into my arms and sprinted carefully upstairs. Renesmee and I looked at Bella, so still and beautiful, lying on the bed. "Isn't she beautiful?"
Without her touching me, I knew that Renesmee agreed. She did touch me a moment later, however, to tell me what she wanted.
"Oh, you'd like your song again?" I asked, not surprised. "You've had me sing it half a dozen times today. You'll have your song as often as you like, and a thousand more besides. Soon I'll write you a whole book of songs, and I'll never ever stop singing, if that's what you'd like." She enjoyed that idea very much. I began the short lullaby I'd conjured up as she was nodding of to sleep.
"Day is done, my little one
Close your eyes now, sweet dreamer
Every star is a light
Watching over you tonight."
She gave me a soft smile--how I loved her smiles--and reached to my face.
"Yes," I answered her unspoken question. "We're all watching over Momma, just like we're watching over you." She snuggled into me as we watched my motionless angel.
