For as long as I could remember, we were all inseparable. From the time I first joined the family, to Alice and Jasper's arrival, we were all close as any brother and sister. We laughed together. We went to school together. We hunted together.

Keyword, together.

But things had changed. My brother, my baby brother, found himself an infatuation. I myself experienced this type of obsession twice, but Edward's fancy seemed to be different. Of course he wouldn't try anything; he hated himself enough not to. He nearly bit our heads of, so to speak, when Rosalie, Jasper, and I suggested it was time to leave Forks after the van incident.

There was a fierce determination, an obligation, in Edward's eyes. It was this almost human need to protect this girl, the very girl who drove him out of town on her first day. The whole situation was unfathomable! What was so special about her?

I threw quick glances at her, silently observing her face, her behavior, and her every movement. She was a clumsy girl, always tripping or dropping something. I found her amusing in a 'laughing at her dismay' type of way.

She was rather plain, this Isabella. A very troublesome girl. It was because of her that the family took sides, fighting against one another. That was a first. I still couldn't see what made her so significant to Edward—what made him want to eat lunch with her instead of us, his kin.

But then I saw it.

It was probably one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen in my life as a vampire. That was saying something. I've mauled, maimed, and butchered. But that one act that Edward performed sent a churn to my stomach, immediately causing a violent shudder to quake my body.

Edward bit into the pizza, chewed it, and swallowed.

Now I understood why she was so special. He loved her.
