Ordinary Day
written by ameo

It was an ordinary day when she realized she loved him. There wasn't anything special about the day; it wasn't Christmas or Valentine's Day or any other holiday for that matter. The weather wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible either. The sun was shining happily and the clouds blocked the shining orb every few minutes, providing shade for the people below. After all, it was just an ordinary day when she realized she loved him.

But what was love? Was it when two people longed for each other? Or is it when one sees the other's flaws as mere dots from a broomstick? What about when one could talk to the other without feeling embarrassed to do so? Or if they are embarrassed, is it when one could talk to the other feeling embarrassed to do so but in the end both laugh about it?

She didn't know. All she knew was that love was the fluttering in your stomach and the dizziness that made you want to sit down; but you didn't sit down because you wanted to be enfolded in the other's arms. That was what she felt.

She was sitting by the lake under the shade of an old tree when she felt a sense of loneliness without him there with her. Her long red hair kept getting in her way so she tied it up with an elastic quickly; she suspected it was messy, but she didn't care. Her green eyes scanned the pages as she continued to read, though her brain didn't comprehend a single word her eyes read. In fact, she didn't turn the page for several minutes because she had to keep starting over again.

She frowned slightly. What was happening? She never zoned out while reading a good book. She knew it, he knew it, her teachers knew it, everyone knew it.

"What happened? You were smiling and now there's a frown."

She looked up to find him standing there with a look of ease. His raven hair was mussed up slightly like a sudden gust of wind had appeared and his warm hazel eyes shone steadily behind his glasses. She shook her head and smiled, her cheeks became rosy.

"That's better." he confirmed, his gaze locking with hers. Then his eyes trailed to the book sitting next to her. "Wha'cha reading?"

She glanced at the book before sighing and looking back at him. "You mean what I was reading." and upon seeing him roll his eyes at her correction she blushed slightly.

He knelt down and stroked her cheek with his thumb. "You're so beautiful, Lily."

This made her woozy and gave her stomach flip-flops, but she merely gave an embarrassed smile in return.

He stood up and stretched, making over-dramatic noises as he did so. Her brown-green eyes watched every move he made. Then he took his shoes off, followed by his white socks.

"What are you doing?" she asked, curious to see what he was up to.

He merely shrugged in reply. "I want to climb this tree."

She didn't try to hold back her grin. He walked to the base of the trunk and climbed up the tree. She watched him the whole way up; and besides, she had a nice view, but that wasn't the point.

He climbed onto a branch and sat there so his legs dangled like a rag doll. His warm hazel eyes stared off into the distance. And then, as quick as a whip, he fell backwards and hung upside down by his legs. It nearly gave her a heart attack. She opened her mouth to scold him for scaring her out of her wits but closed it when she saw his grinning face looking down at her.

And at that moment, she felt the familiar fluttering in her stomach and the dizziness that made her want to be entangled in his arms. And that was when she realized she loved him. It was an ordinary day. It wasn't any special holiday. It wasn't great weather, but it wasn't horrible either. The sun was shining happily and the clouds provided cool air every few minutes. It was just an ordinary day when she realized that she loved him.
