Recap
"Selena-chan!" Fai rode up to where Selena was, despite the steed's protests.
"It fell down there. I have to get it or we'll never find it with all the rubble!" she shouted back through the din.
"Quickly!"
Selena nodded and began to climb down, fingers aching from having to grip so tight to the small holds in the stone. Don't slip don't slip. When she finally reached the narrow ledge where the shard lay, she grabbed it and began to climb back up. Selena couldn't tell if the increased shaking was coming from her own trembling grip of the crumbling crystal around her.
"What they hell are you doing!? We need to go mage!" Kurogane snapped angrily.
"Hold on! Selena's down there!"
"What the hell are you doing?!" Kurogane yelled down to the woman.
"Shard!" she yelled back. As she reached close to the edge, Fai leaned down from his lizard-horse, arm outstretched to help pull her up.
Syaoran rode over to see the situation. "Why is Selena-san down there?!" he exclaimed, panicked. As Selena looked up to see Fai's worried face and outstretched hand, a disturbing sense of déjà vu filled her body with anxiety. As she reached for him, white, sparkling light wrapped around the three males.
"Mokona?!" Fai looked around in confusion.
"Not NOW shiro manju!" Kurogane yelled. It was to no avail; the three disappeared. No… The crystal Selena has been climbing shattered and suddenly there was nothing below as she fell, shard still in hand. The sharp speed of the drop was causing her vision to black out. She quickly fumbled with her necklace and snapped the new shard in just before she blacked out, free-falling to the unknown.
To the Hopeful Future
The woman felt disoriented when she awoke. Piles of crystal rubble, lost weapons and corpses lay on the ground around her outside a large ring of smooth, debris-free ground. Selena laid back down, dizzy and tired. "I'm alive…" she mumbled. She had expected to die, falling from impossibly high. Head pounding, she turned to her back and lifted her right hand. Soft spring green sparks danced on her skin, stirring the wind. It was her own magic that had saved her, acting on its own to preserve its wielder.
She let the limb fall back down. Her body felt heavily. Fai… The look of absolute terror was seared into her mind. Her heart ached. "I'm sorry…" Her eyes prickled. "I want to see you…" It wasn't just Fai; she wanted to see Sakura again, Syaoran, Mokona. Kurogane was going to let her have it. And Tomoyo-hime… they were still to meet. She had been looking forward to meeting the young woman who had already helped her countless times. But if the jinja had a statue of King Yasha… this means this place is connected to that place. It has to be. She covered her eyes with her arms and thought. The men of the jinja had also mentioned the circus troupe and their own statue of Ashura-ou. If King Yasha looked like the statue worshiped at the jinja, could that mean Ashura-ou, the one that had made her wish, was the same god the circus worshipped? It was the only lead they had. She fell too… Ashura-ou. Maybe it I find the body, stay near it… someone will find me.
Finally deciding on a plan, Selena pushed herself up to look around properly. She spotted her staff and crawled over to it, wincing at the stiffness in her body. She used her staff to stand up, legs shaky from the fall. She didn't know where to go; all there was, was back crystal rubble and death. The moon shone brightly on the sky, illuminating the ground and bodies as to paint them white. Picking a random direction, she walked.
The stiffness worked itself out, replaced slowly by an odd jitteriness. Selena didn't know where to go, what direction she was heading. In her world she'd had no need to know about the alignment of the stars, how to find north. But then again, this was a completely different dimension; would it even have mattered had she known? She looked up again. But there's always a moon. Always a sun. Always stars. Those three are the only constants in the dimensions beyond death. Her hand went to her necklace. A new shard, more power. The last six months of war had taught her well about her own magic. Despite the language barrier Fai had taught her, instructing her on how to make shields, blast enemies away, even increase her own or an ally's speed. She's loved those private moments. A gaze too long, a touch too gentle. It made her heart race. It felt like he might be feeling the same. I'll ask him. Next time I see him I'll ask. She suddenly stopped. …if there is ever a next time.
It was a genuine possibility that she would die here, all alone, far away from home. For the first time since the journey began she thought of her parents. Did they know she was gone? How long had she been gone? With so many different cultures at various stages of magic and technological advancement, time had to flow differently from world to world, didn't it? Had she already been gone for just a few minutes? Or was it days? Weeks? Years? Selena shook her head; she had to survive this ordeal first.
After some time she stumbled upon something. An intact corpse. The long, silky black hair was matter with blood and crystal dust. The amber eyes were dull, lifeless, peering out of a beautiful face. The back was at an odd angle, broken over a large hunk of black crystal. Two swords lay by the body.
Ashura-ou.
Selena felt a pang of pain for the fallen king. She'd loved King Yasha so much she hadn't even been able to dispel the phantom Sakura's feather had created. Unwilling to give up that somehow, some way, the two would finally be allowed to love. Selena knelt by the dead king. "I'm sorry… if it means anything, even though you'll never hear it… I'm very sure he loved you too. Even his phantom thought fondly of you… I believe." She reached out to close the king's eyes, allowing her to finally rest. As Selena came in contact with the body, an electric current shot up her arm, jolting her. She gasped, falling back onto the ground and everything tilted and spun. She cried out, clutching her head. "Help…" A weak cry into empty air. The wind picked up around her, tangling her loosened hair. Sparks of magic danced on her skin, an occasional flash of brilliant white and deep black jumping up and between the cooling body of Ashura-ou and Selena. She collapsed and the wind calmed. The moon shone silently. In the distance were the stirrings of lizard-hoofbeats.
As the transportation magic dispersed, Syaoran looked up to the sky, "Ashura-ou…" He couldn't help btu think of his host, her generosity, kindness and strength. To meet such a fate felt too cruel; her one wish was not only impossible but cost her her life.
"I knew it. I'm gonna have to train you starting from scratch." Syaoran turned in surprise to see that the man who looked like Kurogane had spoken. The once dark eyes were now their normal crimson.
"Kurogane-san! Fai-san!" the teenage exclaimed. Kurogane was on his lizard-steed, arms crossed in displeasure. Fai, however, was looking up at the moon, knuckles white on his steed's reins. His once dark eyes were also back to normal, a lovely light azure blue. "Eh? Huh? But your eyes! They're back to normal!"
Without looking at Syaoran, Fai explained. "While we were in the land of the Yasha Clan, it seems they automatically turn black. Had you fallen into that country, yours would have changed as well."
Finally, Syaoran noticed Fai was the only one on his lizard-horse. "Where's Selena-san?" Fai didn't answer.
"She was left behind." Kurogane broke the tension.
"Oh no…" All the blood drained from Syaoran's face. "We have to go back!"
"To what?" Kurogane snapped. "It's all gone, see." Syaoran looked back up and indeed the crystal castle floating in the sky was gone, the last pieces plummeting down like sad shooting stars. Fine tremors were running through Fai's body. He wanted to puke.
Syaoran racked his brain, trying to think of some way to fix the situation. "Maybe she fell with the castle and will be in the ru-rubble…" His voice died down as Fai fixed his with a shockingly cold stare. Fai had always been cheerful, optimistic, a bit lackadaisical. To see such an expression was horrifying.
"Please stop Syaoran-kun. I don't want to see it." The magician's voice was a horse whisper. To his shock Kurogane placed a hand on the other man's shoulder. "She'll survive. She has her magic."
"You black out from such a fall."
Syaoran swallowed. "I'm sorry."
"Syaoran-kun!" The three turned to the voice. Sakura was running towards them, white and red skirts fluttering wildly around her ankles. As she came closer, she noticed the two additions. "Fai-san, Kurogane-san!" Kurogane nodded in greeting. The young girl looked around. "Is Selena-san not with you?" Before anyone could react, the feather that Syaoran had tucked into his shirt glowed. It floated out on its own and when Sakura approached it floated to her, melting into her being. Her eyes rolled back, a flash of pretty spring green becoming gold before she collapsed. Syaoran caught her quickly as Mokona was caught by Kurogane, having been carried in Sakura's arms previously. Fai turned back to the moon, thoughts consumed.
The young man held the sleeping girl close. "She got it back…" But the rest of the sentence was left hanging; at what cost? The group was silent, unsure what to do. While Sakura had gotten her feather back, the whole reason of their being here, they were missing a comrade. Someone who, most likely, was dead. A vile taste was in everyone's mouth.
While they each thought on what had occurred, how to proceed and what was the best solution, their choice was taken as Mokona glowed, a tale tell sign of transporting the group away to the next world. "Hey!" Kurogane snapped. "Not yet shiro-manju! We're missing one damn it." Mokona didn't reply, its wings unfurling and the magical circle appearing below everyone. "Stop!"
Fai slid off his steed, coming to Syaoran and Sakura. "We have to stay together. We can't split again." Despite the calm tone, when he touched Syaoran's shoulder the other felt him shaking.
"Fai-san…" Syaoran looked up to the man. "I'm so sorry."
"…I know."
Kurogane climbed off his own steed and joined the other three. "I knew it!" one of the Ashura warriors called. "You people were in collusion with the Yasha Clan!"
"Does it fucking matter anymore?!" Kurogane snapped, finally having it. "Yasha or Ashura, they're both dead." The man swallowed his words; what was said was irrefutable truth.
"If you ever find their bodies," Syaoran said. "or even a portion of their remains…please. Find some way to bury them together. Do it for them."
One of the Yasha clansman, who had been keeping to themselves, finally spoke up. "If we find your princess's body, we'll honor her too. We won't forget her sacrifice." Syaoran tightened his grip on Sakura's sleeping body. The transportation magic finally obscured everyone's view. They disappeared from the world, leaving only a gentle breeze behind.
The group landed with a softened thud into a cart piled high with blossoms. The landing jolted Sakura awake, to sat up suddenly and looked around, flowers clinging prettily to her hair and clothes. Syaoran pushed himself up. "Where are…"
"It's the Country of Shura!" Mokona announced cheerfully. Fai and Kurogane both sat up, flowers clinging to Fai's blond locks and spilling from Kurogane's broad shoulders. "It's the Jinja." The magical being landed perfectly atop the warrior's head, striking a pose. "Judges rate it a 100-point landing!"
"And did you notice we're missing one?" Kurogane growled. "And get off my head."
The small creature did as asked, landing on Kurogane's outstretched hand. "We are?" Mokona looked around. "Where's Selena?"
"Gone." Fai said, voice strained. "She fell from the castle as it broke apart."
Sakura let out a choked sound, covering her mouth, eyes wide. Syaoran, closed his eyes, pressing the flat of his palms against them. He felt responsible. Mokona had only left due to the feather being found. He should have held onto it stopped it from going into Sakura's body. Now there wasn't even a token to remember the woman by. "She…she can't…" the princess whispered.
"Do we have guests?" The group looked to see a small group of women approaching them. Sakura and Syaoran recognized them as the girls of the circus troupe that had hosted them before. "Oh no! Why the glum faces?" No one replied. "Where are you all from? Is there any way we can help you?" The two teens blinked in surprise and looked to one another; the girls before him didn't recognize them.
Syaoran licked his lips as he got out of the cart. "Uh… both groups from the Jinja and Yuka-Ku are…" He helped Sakura climb out of the pile of flowers.
"Yep! What you see is what you get." One of the jinja diciples came over aong with one of the girls form the circus troupe.
"Yuka-Ku, a building near here, is our base." The woman explained. "But we go everywhere giving performances." The other circus girls nodded in agreement.
"But when we're in trouble, the nice men from the Jinja always come to out rescue!" another girl added. Fai and Kurogane climbed out of the cart.
The man from the jinja curled his bicep, showing off for the circus ladies. "That's right! If there's anything you need help with, you can call on us any time!" The girls clapped and squealed, showering the man with compliments.
Mokona hopped onto Syaoran's shoulder. "The best of friends!"
"This is different from the Country of Shara we visited before…" Syaoran mumbled. "Did we fall into a world that's similar but different?" A sudden uproar from behind the group caused them to turn. The men and women around were going wild, cheering and whistling and crying out in glee.
"What's that?" Kurogane asked.
"You're pretty lucky, travelers." A girl said. "You got here right on the day of a wedding!" The group got closer, curious despite the hanging gloom in their hearts. When they could finally see the bride and groom, two familiar figures came into view.
Sakura gasped. "Suzuran-san!"
"Ain't that the Kannushi of the jinja?" Kurogane added. Indeed it was. Suzuran was bedecked in stunning red and white while Soseki was dressed in inky black and trimmings of soft blue and white. The pair gazed at one another, pure tenderness in their eyes. They turned to the crowd and smiled, the woman blushing in happy embarrassment at the praise form her troupe members.
The jinja disciple with the group nodded eagerly. "And since this is such a blessed occasion, it's only right for the Gods and Princess to be in attendance too!"
The circus girl waved an arm grandly to the group's left. "Feast your eyes on our Gods and Princess!" The group turned and looked. All were shocked at what they saw. The statues of Yasha and Ashura, that had once been separate, were now as one, sitting side by side on the same platform, forever welded together. But even more startling was a third statue of a familiar woman. Her hair fell in lovely ribbons, long and her full height, falling to the base of the statue's platform. She held a staff in the crook of her left arm, a bouquet of metal flowers in her right. The elegant robes she wore were sculpted as to appear wind-blown. A serene expression was on the statue's face. "The two gods have been together since that kind of statue was first made." The woman explained. "And the Princess too is always by their side."
"That's right." Someone commented from the crowd surrounding the statue. They had noticed the visitors and were curious about their odd clothes. "In fact, all the ancient tales say we should never separate them! The Pair of Gods watch over us and the Princess protects our people with gifting us with magic."
"Some stories say," A third person commented "that the Princess guided the two Gods together, a messenger between them until they were finally able to be together forever."
"I love that story." One of the circus women sighed dreamily. "The Princess is such a kind God."
"The country is at peace, and these gods keep it that way." Someone from the jinja said. As they spoke, Mokona hopped up to the box placed in front of the god statue.
The creature peered in and saw something familiar behind the glass lid of the shallow box. "Hey, look in here." The four travelers looked in. There was an old, slightly cracked hair ornament in the shape of a sakura bloom and two brown, braided ropes attached to two hair ornamentation spheres patterned with large flowers. The teenaged girl and boy let out noises of shock.
"Those are…" Sakura whispered.
"We were wearing those…" Syaoran trailed off.
Two of the circus women noticed their surprise. "Those are ancient relics. They've been enshrined here at the jinja for generations." The pair still gaped at the woman, flabbergasted. "I'm sure there's a reason for it…"
"You could ask the Master." One of the jinja men said, referring to Soseki. "He would probably know. But there's no point in asking him now." He grinned at the end. Everyone glanced over to see the groom leading his bride up wooden stairs to a platform. To the pair, there was no one else but the other. The love and joy of the couple radiated like the warmth of the sun.
"The Princess." Fai said. It was the first time he'd spoken since they'd landed. "What's her story?"
"Oh! It's a beautiful one." Someone said. "She was a mortal princess, traveling alone. Her country had been lost so she wandered. She appeared one day to the God Yasha and asked for shelter. She didn't know he was a god. He agreed and it was thanks to her that the God Yasha finally was able to tell the God Ashura of his feelings. Sadly, the princess eventually died but the two gods never forgot her kindness and granter her immortality."
"It's time for the bride and groom to crack the sake casket!" someone called out. Everyone cheered and swarmed over to the platform where a mallet laid waiting on a table by a line of large sake caskets.
The jinja disciple took the hand of the circus girl he'd been flirting with and showing off to earlier. "Let's go!"
"Come drink with us!" the woman called behind her shoulder before running off, giggling. The small crowd dispersed, leaving the travelers and god statues behind. The group watched the scene for a moment, emotions a messy mix.
Fai came over to the box Mokona was beside. "You two were wearing those?" he asked. The two younger members nodded.
"When we were in the Country of Shara, the circus troupe had us wear these clothes to blend in." Sakura explained.
"But when we were in the Country of Shura, we were given different clothes and left the old ones behind." Syaoran finished.
The magician pointed to the box. "These were left in the country of Shura?" The two nodded again.
With the box gleaming in the sun, items securely preserved and the statue of their fallen companion, Syaoran felt certain of his hypothesis. "Maybe the Country of Shura is Shara's distant past."
"What do you mean?" Kurogane asked.
"We landed in the Country of Shura." Syaoran explained. "But then, when we moved, we went into the country's distant past, the Land of Shara. And now, we've moved back to the Country of Shura."
Fai, who had been gazing at the Princess-God statue, pulled himself away. "So we never moved to another world; we simply shifted in time?"
"But if so, why is everything about the Country of Shara so different?" Sakura asked.
"Yeah! Mokona thought the guys and the girls used to be really mad at each other." The creature said. Kurogane walked over to Fai to observe the Princess statue Mokona on his head.
A thought occurred to Syaoran. He remembered his last words to the warriors in Shura, how now everyone got along, said that the two Gods were never to be parted. "Did we…?"
"We changed the future." Fai said quietly.
Syaoran nodded. "Before, the Ashura statue sat alone."
"So did the Yasha statue." Fai agreed.
The teenager looked to the pair of Gods. "I came from the future into the past and said those words... and it looks like the people of the clans took those words to heart. People worship these two statues like before, but always together now."
"Selena too." Kurogane said. "There was no 'Princess' statue before. Now there is."
"The Yasha Clan turned her into a God." Fai said. Kurogane bit his tongue on the matter of Godhood. "As long as these two are together, the strange phenomena won't occur. There's no reason for it too. The Yuka-Ku and Jinja stopped being at odds as well."
Sakura came over to stand in front of the Princess statue. She could see the pain and sadness on Fai's face. She hadn't said anything, but of late Sakura had begun to wonder if Fai had begun to hold feelings for the other female in the group. She clasped her hands in front of her, partially obscured by the voluminous skirts, grip tight. She wondered if he was the one. The Guardian that was sworn to the Goddess of Magic. With each feather, memories were coming back to her not only of Clow Country, but also of her past life as the Goddess of Dimensions. Small bits and pieces, like flower petals settling into a vast stream. "Isn't this for the better? For everyone to get along?"
"Not if it costs us this." Syaoran said somberly, coming over to the rest of the group. Despite the festive atmosphere, once more gloom settled over them. There was no way to return to the Country of Shura, not without what was sure to be a heavy price. Selena had died alone, broken on the ground and far from home. Technically her wish had been granted but everyone felt sick as heart at this being the result.
Sakura suddenly knelt, putting her hands together in prayer. If this was the result, maybe there was some way to guide Selena's soul back to them in another form. If I truly am a Goddess… if we're all truly connected… please… Selena… come back to us. After her prayer, the princess gently touched the tall base the statue stood on, her last respects. Gold sparks jumped from her fingertips to the black base. She gasped, pulling back. "Sakura-hime?" Syaoran asked. Kurogane too was praying respectfully to the fallen woman.
"I-." The sound of stone cracking made all four look to the base of the statue. The cracking continued and the stone face crumbled away, revealing that the base was, in fact, hollow. There was something inside. Or rather, someone. "I-I just touched it!" Syaoran gently helped the princess back as Fai and Kurogane knelt down to look. There was a metal rod cradled in crossed arms. The two men reached in and pulled the body out. As they did, they were shocked to feel warmth; the person was alive. A familiar person emerged. "Selena-san!"
Kurogane took the staff out of her folded hands as Fai held the woman. "Selena?" He hovered a hand over her face. She was breathing slowly, as if in deep sleep. "She's alive. Oh my gods…"
"But how?" Syaoran asked.
"She must have sealed herself away." Fai answered flippantly, not paying attention. "Selena? Can you hear us? Please wake up." There was no reply, the woman continuing to sleep in his arms. He swallowed. "Please…" Kurogane watched quietly. Sakura came over and knelt, touching the other girl's shoulder. Unseen, gold sparks jumped from fingertips to shoulder and silver sparks responded.
Slowly, Selena's eyes opened. Her head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, limbs heavy. As her vision came into focus, she saw icy blue eyes looking back. "You…" Fai didn't even let the woman finish as he hugged her tight, shoulders shaking.
He hid his face in her shoulder. "Don't ever do that again. Ever." He gasped, voice rough. A few tears soaked into the girl's elegant, flowing white dress. It was an exact replica of the robes worn by the Princess statue. Silently, slowly, Selena wrapped her arms around the man, relaxing against him. Kurogane let out a loud sigh, shoulders relaxing. Syaoran smiled, the gloom lifted. The wedding participants were lining up to get some free, celebratory sake.
"You're okay." Sakura sniffed, wiping tears form her eyes. "We were so scared."
"Sorry." Selena said. "I'll try to not scare everyone again."
"Like hell you better not!" Kurogane said, little bite to his words; he was as relieved as everyone else. "Shiro manju, let's get the hell out of here."
The magical creature looked down from the top of the man's head. "You don't wanna drink?"
"… don't tempt me." Before Mokona could reply it suddenly opened its mouth and sucked in the direction of the statues of Yasha and Ashura. A pair of swords flew out and were sucked into the creature's mouth. Everyone in the group looked in stunned surprise. "Please get us out of here already." The warrior hissed.
"Sorry!" A round of loud 'oooh's and 'aaah's made the group turn around back to the wedding. Fai stood, Selena still carried in his arms as she felt too weak to stand on her own. Karen, the leader of the circus troupe sat atop a tall ladder decorated with streamers and flowers. She let forth a wave of fire that glowed bright and fell as soft as snow. People were reaching up to catch the magic lights and Susuna teared up at her friend's special performance for her special day. "Ooooh! How pretty!"
"They're like flowers." Sakura said, reaching out to catch one.
"It really is." Syaoran said.
Selena reached out and caught a small light. If felt warm in her palm. "Is this a wedding?"
"Yes." Fai said. "The head of the Jinja and the head of the circus troupe."
"Oh…" She let her head rest on the man's chest. "That's good. A happy ending." She yawned. "I'm so tired."
The magician looked fondly down at the woman in his arms. "Don't worry, Kuro-pyon and I will keep you safe while you sleep."
"Thank you. Fill me in when I'm awake?"
"Of course." The woman closed her eyes.
Seeing that all was well, Mokona lept up form Kurogane's head, wings unfolding and magic beginning to swirl around. "Hold on, I changed my mind. I want the sake." Kurogane said.
"Too late Kuro-chi!" Fai called over cheerfully, his usual smile finally back on his face. "Let's go let's go! Make sure you hand onto Sakura-chan, Syaoran-kun." He called over to Syaoran. He then looked to Kurogane. "Here, you can hold onto me."
"It's rather chew sand."
"But I can't hold onto you; my hands are full." He grinned. Kurogane let out an annoyed sigh but took hold on Fai's arm, taking Syaoran's in his other while holding onto Selena's staff.
Syaoran and Sakura looked over to the newlyweds. The pair held one of the flames in their hands, admiring the warm glow. They smiled and spoke as one; "Be happy together." The group disappeared, leaving onto the broken base of the statue of the Princess behind.
In an empty void stood the Time-Space Witch. A small creature, identical to the one traveling with Syaoran, Sakura, Fai, Kurogane and Selena except opposite in coloring, opened its mouth and spat out two ornate swords. Magic strands wrapped around the blades and delivered them to the tall woman. She cradled the steel carefully. "The price of making two new gods has been received."
The black Mokona came over to her, landing on her shoulder. "And her?"
"She will be fine. He still cannot see her unless she wills it." Yuko Ichihara began to walk in the darkness. "But he is becoming aware of her; the danger will only increase. The other goddesses are beginning to awaken as well."
Mokona watched as magic began to seep out of every step the witch took. "…and you're not worried he won't kill her?"
Yuko stopped and gave Mokona a gentle, sad smile. "She won't die. Not before it ends. Her parents made sure of it." She began to walk. A path began to form, bright light in the gloom. "I have faith in that."
"The damned witch!" The monocled man glared at the large mirror that showed nothing but static. "I didn't expect her to be able to do that; not just traveling across worlds but through time as well. Her powers are frightening."
"Then she did realize it. What those ruins are." The black-haired assistant said.
"Just as Clow Reed did." Fei Wong read lifted his glass. "But despite all the obstacles he put in my way, Clow Reed is dead. Just as the Goddesses are. Now the only thing standing in my way si the Space-Time Witch."
The assistant came closer to her master. "Do you think the Goddesses are in play as well?"
"Of course they are! That fifth person…" He glared at the mirror. "Even from the beginning they couldn't be seen by me. Not even the Witch has such a power. Either that person was sent by the Goddesses… or is one of the Goddesses herself." He took a sip of his wine. "Which, given who the Princess is, I suspect is the case."
Footsteps alerted the pair of the approaching figure. "Please send me." Fei Wong Reed looked to the person's direction. "Once one enters a new world, it may be the same face, but a different person. They should be convinced of that by now."
"They'd never expect the person they meet to be someone they met before." Fei Wong Reed finished. "Is that your plan?" The figure bowed. "Very well." He smiled. "You will be the basis of my next plan."
