Redemption

Beta for this chapter: Beanielova

AN: Wow, I realize this is going to be a long fanfic because I haven't even got to the main plot yet. xD

Of course, none of you seem to mind so far. I just wanted to indicate how much they care for each other before I rip them... I mean... it all happens. xD

Plus, there are things L tells Light off and on throughout the chapters. That is really important part of the fic.

Now, I have a little warning: from this chapter on pretty much on spoilers for the Death Note novel.

Chapter Four

"L", Light ran his fingers through the thick mess of black hair gently as he called to the man to wake up.

L opened his eyes and side glanced to see Light next to him.

"Hey, are you going to get up?"

L shook his head and curled up more.

"Are you feeling bad?" Light asked laying his hand against L's head before pulling it away, satisfied with the temperature.

"No, Light-kun," L sighed as he leaned into the hand that massaged his scalp, "I'm just being lazy."

"Lazy? L being lazy?" Light laughed receiving a smile from the detective, "and why are you at the edge of the bed?"

L shrugged and turned to him, "I... didn't know if Light-kun would like me so close."

"L its okay, why wouldn't I?"

L shrugged again before putting his hand up to the back of Light's head and gently pulled him down, placing a gentle kiss on his lips.

Light smirked when he pulled away and sat up, "What is it we are doing today?"

"Let's go on that walk we were talking about yesterday." He knew Light would appreciate the forest more then he would. L sat up and looked over at the clock. It wasn't too early, but it was early enough that Watari wouldn't be bringing their coffee and L's sweets for another hour.

"Maybe later," Light laughed, noticing L looking at the time, "I'm going to go take a shower right now, okay?"

L nodded and watched Light as he got up and walked to the bathroom. He sat there quietly for a little while before getting up and walking to the kitchen.

"So the spoiled brat knows how to cook."

L looked up and saw Light standing behind the counter and smirking at him.

"I'm doing something nice for you and you call me a spoiled brat?"

Light laughed again before walking up to him, "Well you are, aren't you?"

"I'm not spoiled Light-kun. I know people won't do anything I want. Watari's just really nice to me."

"And what about your parents?"

L stopped, before realizing he was about to burn the pancake he was cooking and flipped it. "What about them Light-kun?"

"Didn't they spoil you? You must have come from a rich family to have all that you do."

"I... don't have parents Light-kun." he took the pancake and placed it on a plate before pouring in more batter.

Light opened his mouth, he really wanted to say something, but didn't know what he could say. He felt bad for saying that, but would he have found out any other way?

"It's okay Light-kun, you don't have to say anything," L said, noticing the look on Light's face.

"I wouldn't have said that if I had known."

"It's okay, it's not like I'm completely miserable. That's the reason I became a detective... to protect people from what's happening to them."

"And Watari?"

"He took care of me. He has an orphanage and that's where I stayed."

Light walked up to L from behind him and wrapped his arms around the detective's waist. He kissed the exposed flesh of his neck and kept his head on the detective's shoulder, "How can you stand being alone that long?" he asked quietly.

"I wasn't alone Light-kun..."

"You know what I mean."

"You'd get used to it when it's almost all you've ever known. I was really young when it happened Light-kun," he flipped the pancake, "I mean I used to want to have a family of my own after I was done with the whole detective thing for the most part."

"Used too?"

"Well, it can't happen now Light-kun," L said looking over at him and smiling.

Light laughed and pulled away from L. He leaned up against the counter and watched him cook, "I guess I'm enough."

"But would that still be the case if... I told Light-kun that I'm at least 85 percent sure I'm in love with him?" L asked glancing over to him to see his reaction.

Light smiled, "As long as that number doesn't go down." He tried not to laugh at the way L had said that. Saying a percent sure was a funny way of telling someone you love them.

"It wont Light-kun. I'm sure."

"No, you're not."

"Light-kun..." L frowned at him, "I was trying to make you feel better about it."

Light laughed, "You're lucky I'm me and not a girl. I'm pretty sure they'd get mad at the way you say things."

L looked at him confused. He didn't really know much about girls and he really didn't want to. "I don't think a girl would even get this far with me if she didn't like the way I think."

"Unless they did just for who you are and your money. A lot of them are like that you know."

"So Light-kun thinks low of girls?"

"No, not all of them. Some... most are just..." Light rolled his eyes at the thought of a particular girl that was 'like most'.

"Light-kun, girls confuse me and I don't really care much for them."

L put the last pancake on the plate and held it out to Light, smiling. "Here you go Light-kun.

Light took the plate and smiled back, "Thank you, but aren't you going to eat?"

"When Watari brings me my food." L said looking at him confused.

"You should eat better than that," Light said sitting down at the table.

"I'm healthy."

Light looked over to him, his eyebrow raised, "Whatever you say." He studied the man before him and tried not to laugh, if L was healthy Light was REALLY healthy. Not only did the man look sleep deprived, but he was surprisingly scrawny as well, "I don't think tape worms are healthy to have."

"I don't have a tape worm," L said before turning as he heard the door open with his precious sweets coming in.

Light rolled his eyes before taking a bite of his own food. He wondered if L always eating sweets had something to do with him not having parents to stop him, but Light figured an orphanage would feed kids better than that.

After he was through with his food he walked up behind L, who was sitting on the couch and slowly eating animal crackers.

"You know, you shouldn't play with your food."

L shrugged before popping one of the crackers in his mouth, "Why not Light-kun?"

"Well... some people consider it rude."

"It's just us here," L stated.

Light watched as L placed one of the animal cookies on the edge of his coffee cup. The younger rolled his eyes before wrapping his arms around the older man. "Do you like torturing your food, too?" he asked as the cookie fell in the coffee.

A slight frown plastered itself on L's face. "It just amused me for a moment," he said sarcastically.

Light laughed and stood up straight, "Come on, let's go."

L nodded as he stood and followed Light out the door.

"You know, you've been acting kind of funny today," Light said as they stopped and rested on a big rock.

"What do you mean Light-kun?" L asked, pretending he didn't know what Light was talking about.

"Ryuzaki," Light said, since they were out in the open, "there's someone following us, and you know it. I bet you even know who it is."

"Light-kun, don't be ridiculous."

"I'm not stupid! You knew I'd figure it out!"

"Light-kun, don't worry yourself with such insignificant things."

"Insignificant? You think being followed is insignificant?"

L looked up into Light's eyes, without saying a word.

"Ryuzaki... this isn't a vacation is it? This is you running away."

"I have nothing to run from." Despite the slight anger and fear L was feeling, he still kept his monotone voice.

"I think you do, and if the great detective is running away, it must be something bad."

"Light-kun! You are just being paranoid," L stood up and looked up at the sky as he heard thunder, and he soon felt rain drops falling down upon him. "Let's go back now," L said, turning away and walking back up the path to the hotel.

Light noticed L did this slowly so that it would be easy for him to catch up, but he knew L didn't want him to notice. L wanted him to think he was mad and trying to get away from him.

Light kept his mouth shut, without saying a word to L until they got back to the hotel. He shut the door and locked it. If L was really in love with him then how did he expect them to stay together if he kept everything a secret? Plus the fact they always were trying to be better than one another. He turned to see L walking up to him and handing him a towel.

Light took it, but instead of drying himself he wrapped it around L's shoulders and gently pulled him closer before wiping away water that had dripped down the side of the older man's face.

L closed his eyes and leaned into the towel before letting out a shaky sigh. He rested his hands on Light's hips and let the younger dry his face and hair.

When Light was done he pulled at the hem of L's shirt indicating he wanted the detective to lift his arms. When L complied, Light pulled the soaked shirt off and dropped it down on the floor next to him.

He patted the pale chest dry as the older man pulled of his black shirt. Light laid his forehead against L's before gently sliding his fingers down L's back, making the detective shiver. "Your skin's so sensitive," Light said smirking.

L didn't say anything and brushed his lips again Light's, waiting for a kiss but it never came. He opened his eyes when he felt Light pull away.

"Light-kun?" L asked gently, barely audible.

The younger man walked over to the bathroom door before turning to him, "I'm going to go take a shower."

L frowned slightly trying not to show it. Light already had a shower just a few hours ago

"You should change before you catch a cold."

"Light-kun," L said, louder this time, just before Light shut the door.

Light looked back at him waiting for what the older had to say.

L looked down, trying to hide his blush. "Can I come?"

"I'll save enough hot water for you to take one after me."

L looked up at Light in disbelief, only to see the door close and hear the lock click.

L looked around the room, scanning over everything before shutting the windows and glass door. When he was finally satisfied he sat on the bed with his knees closely drawn to him. He really didn't want to be alone, and although Light was just in the bathroom, he still felt very much alone. And as though that wasn't enough to worry about, he wondered why Light had acted the way he did. Light wasn't one of those people that expressed their emotions so freely (although L had seen the younger get a little too dramatic at times), but he wasn't cold hearted at all. It wasn't like Light to be that way to anyone, with the exception of a few small occasions with L back during the Kira case.

It was like Light was trying not to feel anything, or he was just playing a game with L to see if he's admit to someone following him?

L sighed and leaned back against the headboard, it was just too frustrating to think about. He looked over to the window, part of him wanted to go find Watari, but leaving the room might bad enough, and that wasn't worth it. So L just sat there quietly as he waited for Light, who L bet would take his sweet, precious time
