A Promise

Remember what the stories say

I promise I'll come back some day

To hear you sing, make fire dance

And to give life a final chance

You told me once, about the one

Who had a great love for his son

The son who died a cold, dark night

And brought the women dressed in white

But he could not let his son die

So a glowing wall was his goodbye

It's true the boy is not my son

But it feels good to love someone

Other than you, but please don't cry

There is no such word as goodbye

Though you don't think I'll keep my word

This will not be the last you've heard

Don't hate the boy, he's not my own

But thinks he's mine right to the bone

Please don't blame him for tonight

I'm only trying to make this right

I wish I'd given my life for you

But those I love are far and few

Now I've made a horrid choice

But for my son I've lost my voice

If nothing else, please understand

Someday I'll live back on farmland

I promise I'll come back for you

If love can make a promise true

AN: This is a poem I wrote after reading Inkspell, about a year ago. The plotline about Roxane and Dustfinger really touched me, and I thought it wasn't very well resolved at the end. The reason I wrote this poem was because I thought Dustfinger really left things unsaid with Roxane, and he should have given her more than a vague promise. I think that if he could have said more to her, this poem is close to what he would have said.
