Waking

There was a certain amount of irony in his decision. Tidus wasn't sure exactly when he came to that realization. It could have been when they first stood before Yunalesca and had the truth revealed. It might have been when Bahamut had visited in his dreams. And though he tried not to think of it as they battled with the monstrous shell his father had become, the thought kept resurfacing.

He was a hypocrite. For the first time in his existence, Tidus thought himself to be a greater monster than his father. Considering that Jecht's current form, it was quite the accomplishment.

When he'd discovered the purpose of the summoner's pilgrimage he had been deeply hurt and absolutely outraged. Not only was he angry that he had not been told, but he was angry at the entire situation. Yuna had chosen to die for the good of Spira, and he had come so far at her side without knowing.

Some greater power was laughing at him, Tidus knew. Backing away to give Yuna room to summon Bahamut, Tidus allowed himself to indulge in a bit of grim humor. They found a way to save Spira and Yuna.

The only one who had to disappear was Tidus himself.

And wasn't that funny? Everyone but him had known that Yuna would sacrifice herself in the end. Now he was the only one who knew what was going to happen to him. He wondered if they'd be as angry with him for keeping such a secret as he was. They had every right.

Maybe he should have told them ahead of time. It might have been more fair to them, to Yuna. Still, he hadn't been able to bring himself to do it yet. He didn't want to take away any of their determination to see this through.

He was part of the Fayth's dream, made real. In some ways he was less alive than Auron, who was unsent. Would he die? Or would he just cease to exist? His hands were trembling. Tidus tightened his grip on his sword.

Yuna spun her staff, illuminated in the light of the Fayth. He heard Bahamut's roar. A boy's voice echoed in his head, meant for Tidus only.

It's time to wake up. The voice was soft. It sounded worn.

Maybe it is. Tidus thought back to dragon. He looked to his battle ready friends arrayed around him and then to the woman standing at the mighty Aeon's side. But don't think it's for your sake.
