A loud explosion awoke Maria and the young hedgehog beside her. She got into her day clothes and ran onto the deck of the ARK.
"Grandfather! What's happening!?" Maria asked her granddad.
"It's G.U.N. It stands for Guardian Units of Nations." He explained. They were all thrown backwards as the deck partially exploded. Everything was sucked out into space.
Luckily, Shadow and Maria were thrown back so far that they fell down an airshaft. They weren't the only ones who had survived. Gerald had been caught by the lead G.U.N. ship. The other scientists were also alive.
Shadow had been knocked out by the explosion. Maria held Shadow close and shielded him when they crashed on the floor below. The shock reawakened Shadow. As they got up, they heard groaning from under them. Their friend, Abe, son of one of the scientists, was muttering something.
"Oh, my gosh! Abe, we're SO sorry!" Maria apologized.
"Yea! We're sorry! But we've got to get out of here!" Shadow said as he helped Abe up.
"I know! The military forces are invading the ARK." He replied. "You could hear the explosions from the MOON!"
"Well, technically, sound travels through the air in sound waves. Specifically, there isn't air in space so you wouldn't hear any—" Shadow started.
"Excuse me to interrupt this little science class, BUT THE ARK IS UNDER ATTACK FOR GOODNESS' SAKE!" Abe yelled.
"Hold onto me!" Shadow yelled to Abe and Maria. "I think I can Chaos Control out of here!"
"No! Shadow it's too dangerous! You know that your Chaos Powers are very unstable!" Maria screamed.
"You have to trust me Maria! I know I can get us out. I just need a running start!" Shadow ran as fast as he could but stopped at one window. The professor was inside the room, tied to a chair, a soldier aiming at him. He heard what the elderly scientist said.
"You may defeat me, but Project: Shadow will never fail! For my last act from beyond the grave, I shall send the ARK crashing into Earth! Nothing can stop this act! And those of you still on the ARK shall be killed!" They saw as the soldier pulled the trigger, the professor fall to the ground, and heard his last words repeat through their heads.
Shadow stood there, staring in horror. Finally he pressed himself against the glass, as if trying to break in.
"PROFESSOR GERALD!" He yelled, getting the attention of the soldiers. His entire body glowed red. He crashed through the window. Suddenly, a large red shock wave flew from his body, knocking over the soldiers. The soldiers were getting up. Shadow jumped through the already broken window, grabbed Maria and Abe, and ran off. Just as they were entering the last corridor to the escape pods, the entire wall was blasted away, revealing a black hole. They clung onto the pillars nearby. Suddenly, Abe slipped, falling out into space, only to be saved by a G.U.N. ship.
Shadow pulled Maria into the Escape Pod chamber. They had realized that the soldiers had caught up. As Shadow was about to attack, he was encased in a tube. Someone had started the escape pods! He looked toward the control panel. Maria had sent him into the pod.
"Maria! Let me out! I can beat these guys!" Shadow said. Maria hesitated. A solder stepped in. He shot a bullet toward Maria. It hit. "MARIA! NO!" Shadow yelled. Maria smiled weakly.
"Please Shadow…I want you to make the people on Earth happy. Sayonara, Shadow the hedgehog." She weakly pulled the lever.
"MARIA!" Shadow was sent from the Ark. Before he finally got shot out, he screamed, "CHAOOOOS…CONTROOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!" The Ark disappeared. It had been sent out of the Earth's atmosphere. Shadow let a tear escape his eyes.
"Goodbye, Maria…" He crashed into a warehouse.
MEANWHILE…
Abe was crying in one of the cells.
"I will avenge you, Maria. I will kill Shadow. I swear it…"
