The Rain
Tobias Snape saw his ten-year-old son, Severus, walk home side by side with a red-haired girl with a giddy grin on his face. Severus and that girl, Lily, always went to the park up the road and now that it was dark, his son and the girl were coming back. No man should ever smile and Tobias glared at the pair as he watched them out of the bedroom window. It sickened him that his son, his heir, smiled and willingly touched a woman – the subservient gender of the human race. He would teach that boy a lesson when he came into the house
Eileen knew what Tobias was thinking. She knew that this was the only friend Severus ever made and she was so proud of her little boy. For him to grow up alone, and in an abusive home in which they could not get away, she was so happy that he found a friend. She saw Tobias' shoulders tense.
"Tobias, please let him have a childhood. Don't force-" Tobias stormed to her and cut off her sentence with a resounding slap to her face.
"Do not tell me what to do!" Eileen bowed her head, then got back in their bed to lie down. She curled up around her mother's pillow and listened as Severus came in.
"Goodnight, mother, father," Severus said when he peeked into their room.
"Goodnight, my son." Eileen smiled.
"Get to bed, Severus!" Tobias yelled, glaring at his wife. Severus' smile deflated, nodded to his father, and went to his room. After the door to the room next to theirs shut quietly, Tobias whipped around and snarled at his wife.
"You stupid wretch. How dare you soften my son!" he struck her again. The crack of a nose breaking fueled his anger on. Women are weak; they break easily and he wouldn't let his son be corrupted anymore. He slapped her again. Tobias shuddered as her screams filled his ears. Yet…another scream was heard.
Severus shut his door and laid on his thin blankets and lumpy mattress. He had a bad feeling all day today, even Lily noticed that something was off in him. Ever since he woke up that morning, he couldn't miss the feeling that something was just not right in the world.
"You stupid wretch. How dare you soften my son!" Severus heard through the wall. No! He curled up in a ball and shook as he heard the blows to his mom landed with such a force.
"No," he whispered softly.
"No," he said stronger.
"NO!" he got up and started pounding on the wall. "Stop hurting her! Stop!" Severus screamed out. There was a tense silence, and then footsteps thumped to Severus' room. The shadows under the door revealed that they were bigger feet – his father's.
The door opened and his father was bearing down on him. Tobias grabbed Severus' arm, twisting it hard so that it could break if the right pressure was on it, and threw the boy outside in the rain. Tobias locked the door, and Severus ran up, pounding to be let in again. He had to save his mother!
Severus heard another scream from above him. He backed out into the yard, looked up, and watched the shadowed fists of a madman pummel against the submissive arms and face of his wonderful mother. The black silhouettes against the bright candlelight fought, and the small arms and head fell quickly.
Severus' heart ached. He knew what happened. The rain fell hard on his head as if the skies felt his anguish and shared his pain, yet he didn't feel any of it. He didn't feel cold; he felt…nothing. His mom was…
