So She Dances

Disclaimer: I don't own Wicked, or Josh Groban. I'm not sure which depresses me more.

A/N: I'm still working on Ever After, but was listening to music and this popped into my head and wouldn't leave so here we are. It's a little abstract but was inspired by the song So She Dances by Josh Groban. If you haven't heard it, I strongly suggest you look it up on youtube or just buy the song as it's amazing. That is all.

A waltz played as she walked in the room, the music stopped as she stepped on the dance floor. Badly concealed snickers accompanied her when she pulled that ridiculous hat from her head and stared at it, only now realizing that it had not been a gift so much as a joke. She replaced it, defiantly brushing the hair back from her emerald face. Fiyero gaped at her, along with the rest of the dismayed crowd, when she'd begun to dance, as if she were casting a spell on them all.

"Who in Oz is that?" He asked, unable to help himself.

"My roommate," was his date's reply. "Please, don't stare."

"How can you help it?" He said, but not for the reason Galinda thought.

The green girl was beautiful; entrancing in a way that no one could possibly dream of being. She was a night angel, ethereal in the lights that played on her skin as she moved. He knew, as he watched her weave her arms to music only she could hear, that she was completely out of his reach in a way no other girl had ever been before. Even then she was far above him, and still reaching for the sky.

He wanted to join her, to dance with her, to fly with her. But held back, too marred in his reputation to move forward and he missed his chance. Galinda beat him to the dance floor and cut in. The music started once more and together they moved, until the spell wore off and the rest of the room joined them.

He'd missed his second chance as well; this time due to cowardice. He let himself believe there would be time to tell her how he felt when she returned. She hadn't returned; Glinda had come back alone. It was clear to him that without Elphaba they were both lost, and far more than Glinda's name had changed.

He loved them both then he decided. Each girl fit half of the double life that he lived. Prince Fiyero Tiggular was content to play Glinda the Good's handsome beau. He could not complain about the pay, or the fact that his parents did not bother him about his future. More importantly, he was with the one person in Oz who loved Elphaba too.

But he knew he'd give it all up, just to tell Elphaba what he should have years ago in a clearing just outside Shiz University.

In his dreams the world was different. He'd taken his chance at the Ozdust. When he closed his eyes he could see himself with Elphaba. They were the only two on the floor and she fit in his arms so naturally. The twinkle lights glinted brightly on their skin, and the crowd, even Galinda, was happy for them.

When dawn came, dreams ended and Elphaba was gone. Fiyero was sick of waking up to it. He tried to tell Glinda, but she'd already picked her side of the duality. He picked the other, and when he found Elphaba in the Wizard's throne room he took his final chance.

In the shadows of the Gillikin Forest they danced in the moonlight. Their hearts kept rhythm as they spun beneath constellations and dreams, for as long as they could.
