When Saeki
first takes him out for camping on the beach, Ryou thinks it is a
rather silly idea. They might be kids with a healthy immune system,
but sleeping outside in the middle of winter is not exactly something
one should do just for the fun of it. But even as he says so, Ryou
consents, because this is Saeki, and Ryou would never let
Saeki down.
So they
take a tent and their sleeping bags and sneak out at night, when
their parents think they are already sound asleep, and move to the
beach. Ryou thinks the waves rushing over the sand, mixed with
Saeki's even breathing is actually sort of calming, especially
since he now has to sleep alone normally – without a brother to
share his bed with.
The second
time Saeki takes him there is in spring. It is not as cold as it was
in winter, so they forego the tent and just sleep out in the open,
the sparkling night sky clear in their view. Their parents haven't
found out about their nightly trips and they both prefer to keep it
that way, enjoying their company.
When Ryou
spots a shooting star he does not bother waking Saeki up, but instead
wishes upon it for them to stay this way forever. He never tells
Saeki, but he is sure the other boy knows anyway.
In summer
there is no need for either a tent or sleeping bags, and they lie
curled up with each other in the sand, Ryou's head on Saeki's
chest and his arm around Ryou's shoulders. He isn't quite as
lonely anymore without Atsushi, because he has Saeki now to hold him,
but at the same time he knows it is not quite the same.
They are
both awake again when the sun rises, bathing them in the warm, golden
light that makes them forget the worries they might have had.
When it is fall Ryou knows exactly why Saeki is not quite the same as Atsushi. He is not his twin brother, not his other half, but when Saeki cuddles up with him, in only his sleeping bag, pressing a light kiss against his temple, he knows he has at least found a love he can value just as much.
As winter comes again they no longer have to go camping – they sit inside of Saeki's house, by the fireside, each of them a cup of hot chocolate in their hands. And when Saeki smiles at Ryou, resting his head on the other's shoulder, they both know Ryou's wish has come true.
