PROLOGUE
Year 1832
"Please," I begged. "Let him go!"
Lucian turned to look at me with his red eyes and laughed. In his hands he held my love's life, Martin DeLacoure. He pulled my fiancé up with his hair. There was blood marring his face and all over the ground. One of his eyes was slowly getting swollen.
"Please, I love him," I sobbed grabbing Lucian by the arm trying to stop him from hurting Martin. I loathed Lucian more than anything in the world. "Please, let him go."
"No!" he growled back throwing Martin away and grabbing me instead. "You belong to me! And you will be mine… forever!"
My world tilted in it's axis as I realized how insane and obsessed he was with me. I didn't understand the why of it or when it began. I only knew that I had to save Martin. Martin, the only one I had ever loved. I didn't see any way out. Lucian had appeared in her life as a tornado, forming without warning and destroying everything in its path. I had fought him as hard as we could and nothing had been able to stop him.
"OK," I whispered to him giving Lucian what he greatly desired. "I will…" I chocked on my next words closing my eyes hating what I was going to do.
"No," a voice groaned from behind Lucian. "Please, my love, no."
His words cut straight through my heart. "Don't leave me, love. Don't go."
"I will," I gasped out again trying with all might to block out Martin's voice, "go with you, Lucian. Willingly."
"Willingly?" his eyes shone with enthusiasm.
"No, love, no. Stay with me. Please, Isabella." Martin begged forcing himself slowly up. I looked behind Lucian at my Martin and cried harder.
"I will save you," I cried to him.
"I will go with you!" I yelled at Lucian between sobs. "But, please, let him go!"
Lucian smiled and caressed my cheek. "Did you hear, human? Isabella will come with me."
I forced myself not to flinch away from him. Lucian laughed and brought his cold lips to mine.
"NO!" Martin begged. "Don't take her from me. I'll kill you!!! I will die without her!"
"All right," Lucian smiled down at me, his shining with triumph. I felt dread completely overwhelm me at his expression. I only had time to scream my pain as Lucian turned around and attacked Martin. The images of what happened would stay etched into my soul for the rest of my life.
"NOO!" I screamed as I fell down on my knees staring at Martin's lifeless body. Sobs shook my whole body. I hadn't even had the chance to tell him good-bye.
"Did you really think that I would let him live, if you loved him?" Lucian spat turning to face me, Martin's blood dripping from his hands, clothes and face. "You are mine, now. Forever."
"No, not forever," I shook my head numbly, "I'm human. I will die one day and I will join him in heaven."
"No, you will live as long as desire. I have the power to keep you alive." Lucian smiled.
I shook my head in negation once more. I didn't matter what he said. I would make sure to not live for very long. I would leave this hell very soon.
