Two A.M.
Kahoko couldn't help herself. She had been laying in bed but her longing had kept her from being able to sleep. Finally she gave in and heaved herself up. She padded to the source of all her current problems and stared at it with undisguised wanting in her eyes, just sitting there waiting for her to pounce.
So she did. She grabbed the strawberry pudding that had been taunting her all evening and dug into it with gusto. The first bite had her sighing in bliss and she leaned against the counter to savor her prize.
The lights came on and she blinked rapidly to let her eyes adjust to the sudden brilliance. Her husband of one year three months 12 days and something hours (so she counted! It wasn't a big deal to remember something like that. Hmph.) stared at her in exasperation.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you." Kaho said apologetically.
He moved so he stood across from her and leaned against the fridge. "No problem. I felt you get up so I followed you out of curiosity. I see that it was just another pudding run."
Kaho looked a little guilty. "I just can't help myself. They're so good." She ate another bite to illustrate her point.
He eyed her and the spoon she was licking enthusiastically. Suddenly he was a little more interested in tasting something. "Hmm. I think I'd like a bite too."
Kaho's face screwed up into dangerous lines. "Mine." She shoveled in another spoonful then held it protectively close to her chest.
He sighed. "There's just no getting between a pregnant woman and her pudding."
"That's right." She finished off the last bite. "I'd really have to hurt you then. And I don't want to explain that to your son or daughter."
He laughed and reached for her hand. "I don't want our son to visit his mom in jail."
"Our daughter." She corrected, smiling. "Although I'm sure she'll inherit your appetite. Which means she'll be much more dangerous than me."
"Hey!" He responded, laughing. "Now that the pudding run has been completed, can we please go back to bed? There's a long day ahead of us tomorrow."
"Yes, dear." Kaho rolled her eyes while tossing her trash away. He was always so sensitive about it so she did it when he turned away to go back to bed.
"By the way, Kazuki." Kaho murmured. "I need to go back to the store for some more pudding tomorrow. We're all out."
"You ate that whole box?" Kazuki turned back, looking at her incredulously.
"I'm pregnant." She reminded him. "And if I don't get pudding for breakfast tomorrow, someone's going to suffer. By someone suffering, I mean you."
"Fine. I'll go buy a whole cart tomorrow." Kazuki grumbled. "Maybe I should invest in their stock as well. Ow!
Rubbing her stinging hand, Kaho informed him. "That's what you deserve for making fun of a pregnant woman."
"Oh man." Kaxuki grumbled as he followed his wife back to bed and closed the door. "I hope my daughter is nonviolent like her father."
