Did you see the sky?
I think it means that we've been lost
"Shawn…"
Gus stared off the edge of the bridge into the crystal clear water below.
Far below.
The pit of his stomach began to tighten and twist itself into a pretzel.
What was he doing here?
Of all the stupid and potentially deadly things Shawn had ever tried to talk him into (and there were a lot of them), bungee jumping had to be the stupidest.
Maybe one less time
is all we need
I can't really help it if my tongue's all tied in knots
Jumping off a bridge, it's just the farthest that I've ever been
"Come on, Gus. You're not scared, are you?" Shawn asked tauntingly, strapping his helmet on.
His bungee cord was already tied securely to his feet.
He was ready to go.
"No," Gus retorted. "I'm just remembering what my Mom used to say…'and if Shawn jumped off a bridge, would you do that, too…?'"
"Of course you would."
"No, Shawn. No, I wouldn't."
"Then why are you here?"
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
Anyplace but those I know by heart
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
I'll follow you down, but not that far
"Think about it, Gus! You'll be free-falling for eight exhilarating seconds. You'll be flying!"
"…before I plummet to my icy, watery death."
"That almost never happens."
"Almost never?!"
I know we're headed
somewhere, I can see how far we've come
But still I can't remember anything
Shawn was poised on the edge, eager to take the plunge.
He turned back and grinned manically.
"Don't be a chicken, Gus."
"I'm not a chicken!"
"What was that? Sorry. I couldn't hear you over all the clucking."
"Shawn!"
"Baawwkaa!"
Let's not do the wrong thing and I'll swear it might be fun
It's a long way down when all the knots we've tied have come undone
"Have I ever steered you wrong?"
"Yes!"
"Okay. Fair enough. But have I ever really put your life in danger?"
"Yes!"
Shawn had to consider for a moment.
"…but I never actually got you killed."
"No," Gus conceded. "You've never gotten me killed."
Anywhere you go, I'll
follow you down
Anyplace but those I know by heart
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
I'll follow you down, but not that far
Gus took a deep breath and slowly made his way to the edge, next to Shawn.
The water still looked very far away…
What the heck am I doing?
How you gonna ever
find your place
Running in an artificial pace
I'm going to die…Gus kept thinking.
I'm going to die…
I'm going to die…
Are they gonna find us lying face down in the sand?
So what the hell now, we've already been forever damned
"Ready?"
"No!"
"Go!"
Shawn ran and leapt off the edge, diving head first into the blue expanse below. He spread his arms like an eagle, screaming until the tether caught him and snapped him back up, then let him fall again.
Gus had to admit it did look kind of fun…
Anywhere you go I'll follow you down...
With a harrowing battle cry, Gus closed his eyes and leapt.
