"Good morning, Captain Kuchiki," Renji greated his superior jovially, giving his black and red sunglasses on top his head a small jiggle.

The Sixth Division Captain blinked at the unusually chipper morning greeting. His vice captain tended to be half asleep when he came into to work, not to mention late. "Good morning, Abarai," he answered a bit guarded. Abnormal behavior in Renji tended to lead to either trouble or something surprisingly nice and it was always impossible for Byakuya to tell what it would be until too late. Byakuya had sworn Renji was trying to tell him he wanted to be transferred to another division a few months back and was shocked into speechlessness when it ended up as a confession of love. Of course he was able to return the favor in kind by making the redhead explain to Rukia why they were seeing each other.

A bit of Renji's happy glow dimmed at his answer to his greeting but he didn't seem to want to give up with whatever he wanted to say. He shifted his sunglasses again before addressing his superior and lover, "Looks like it'll be a beautiful b sunny /b day, doesn't it, Captain?"

"Actually there are quite a few clouds in the sky and the forecast is for rain in the afternoon," Byakuya flatly replied, still puzzled at what Renji was trying to get at this time.

"Well, umm," Renji mumbled a bit dejectedly. He shifted his sunglasses again and Byakuya finally got the hint and asked bemused, "What do you want me to notice about your sunglasses, Abarai?"

The redhead shinigami's brown eyes lit up happy that his captain finally noticed his new sunglasses. While it was disappointing that it took the older man so long to pay them any attention, Byakuya had never bothered to notice anything new or different about him unless it was something that needed to be corrected so this was a big thing to Renji. So he chose not to worry too much about the fact that he had to explain why the sunglasses warranted attention and just did it. "Well they're new. I was finally able to save enough money to buy a new pair to replace the old ones that were broken."

Taking another glance at the sunglasses, Byakuya then returned to his paper work and commented, "Your fashion sense is getting better, they are not as hideous as the last pair."

Renji had gotten to know his captain well enough over the past few months of spending a lot of extra time with him to begin to figure out the difference between insults and compliments. As both seemed to sound very alike it was no small feat but Renji noticed that Byakuya tended to avert his eyes before he would compliment someone so he smiled broadly at the fact that not only did he get the older man to notice his new sunglasses but he even got a rare compliment out of him. As he excused himself from his superior's office Renji could not help but think that the sun became brighter even from behind the clouds.
