Sai looked the longer-haired brunette over in curiosity. This was Sasuke? The artist didn't see anything special in the dark eyes returning his appraisal. Sure the other man was surprisingly good looking, but that was a fact common in most men his age.

There was nothing about the Uchiha that made him stick out to Sai. Pale skin and dark hair, dead eyes and a stony expression, they were all things that Sai saw in himself every time he looked into a mirror. What was it about Sasuke that made him impossible to replace in Team 7?

Sure they had essentially grown up together but that was when everyone had ignored and shunned Naruto, so it wasn't as though Sasuke had endeared himself to the blond during that time. Sakura had cared more for the brunette in those years, so, while he couldn't care less about whether or not she liked him, Sai could at least understand it.

But this, whatever this was between Naruto and Sasuke, Sai couldn't comprehend any of it.

"He still talks about you," Sai said finally, delighting in the other man's lack of a reaction. A bad sign for the blond who still held on to this cold man but a good one for Sai himself.

"Why would I care what he talks about," Sasuke replied indifferently. "I left him behind a long time ago," he finished confidently, leaving no doubt in Sai's mind what was being left unsaid. I'm better than him. Better than you, better in his eyes.

The shorter-haired man gave the other the briefest nod of acknowledgement before he smirked. "Soon he'll only talk about me."

Red flared before Sai's eyes as he watched the Uchiha react. The smirk on his face widened as Sasuke straightened, even at his full height he was only an inch shorter than the newest member of Team 7.

He caught the fist before it could crash into the left side of his face, before Sai had even seen the younger man move. Perhaps that Sharingan made him a little special after all. Sasuke sneered and swung at him again. I'll protect his bonds!
